Celtic are reportedly interested in signing the former Liverpool centre-back, who looks set to be available on a free transfer this summer.

Defence has been an area of weakness for Celtic this season. They have the worst defence in the top four of the Scottish Premiership. Rangers, Hearts and Motherwell have comfortably conceded less than the Hoops.

Cameron Carter-Vickers has had to undergo surgery and is not expected to be back before the end of the campaign. He might even miss the World Cup. Alistair Johnston has also spent most of his time out on the sidelines. They are two of the club's most senior players in the backline and have been missed.

Liam Scales and Auston Trusty have been the starting centre-back duo for the most part. While they have done a decent enough job, there is clearly room for improvement there. At the very least, the Hoops need more options in the area.

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey did not make the grade at Celtic. To be honest, he was not given the chances he needed, and has actually done well out on loan in the Bundesliga since leaving Parkhead.

Neither Benjamin Arthur, on loan from Brentford, nor Dane Murray looks good enough to be a starting centre-back for Celtic either.

That is an area where Celtic will need to strengthen in the summer transfer window. It appears they have a former Liverpool player in their sights, who could help in that matter.

According to TEAMtalk, Ozan Kabak of Hoffenheim is on the list. He is set to be available on a free transfer.

Kabak spent time on loan at Liverpool, back when Jurgen Klopp was their manager. The Turkish international made 13 appearances for the Reds while at Anfield.

He returned from a long-term ACL injury in October of 2025. Since then, he has been able to establish himself as a starter for Hoffenheim.

Kabak's current deal with the German club is set to run out at the end of the season though. And that means that Celtic could have the chance to sign him as a free agent.

Of course, there would be a bit of risk involved, considering his recent injury history. That being said, the chance to sign a player of Kabak's quality as a free agent does not come around often.

If Celtic do have a genuine chance of signing Kabak, it would definitely be a risk worth taking. He is still just 25 years old, has 26 caps for Turkey and has played an integral part in Hoffenheim sitting at third in the Bundesliga. He also has a penchant for scoring goals despite being a centre-back, and has scored four times in 15 appearances in the German top flight this season.
