Celtic's recruitment in recent times has faced heavy criticism and rightfully so. The Hoops have signed plenty of players, either permanently or on loan, but only a handful of them have worked out. One that has from the summer window is Benjamin Nygren.
Nygren had been in excellent form for Nordsjaelland, scoring 28 goals over the past two seasons, before Celtic went out and signed him in the summer. And he has taken his game up a level since the move.
Nygren has been Celtic's biggest threat going forward by far this season. He has scored 19 goals and provided 7 assists. Nobody is even a close second in terms of effectiveness in front of goal. What makes it even more impressive is the fact that he has played mostly in a midfield role.
Nygren has the ability to find himself in the right place at the right time consistently. He pops up in good goalscoring positions pretty much every game. And while his finishing has let him down on occasion, the overall numbers speak for themselves.
Anyways, that kind of form has come with speculation as well. There have been rumours that Nygren is already drawing interest from down south in England. Could a summer exit from Celtic be on the cards after just a solitary year in Glasgow?
Fortunately, it does not seem to be the case. According to Football Insider, Celtic have no plans to allow Nygren to leave in the summer despite rumours around a possible departure. Pete O'Rourke said about the Swedish international's situation:
“I’d be very surprised if Celtic would consider letting Nygren go this summer.
“He’s been, arguably, their best player this season since his arrival in the summer from Nordsjaelland. He’s really impressed up in Glasgow.
“He’s really stepped up to the plate, and you daren’t think where Celtic might be if they didn’t have Nygren this season as well, because he’s been so key for them.
“Nygren is under contract until 2029, and I think Celtic have an option (to extend) as well, so there’s no concern from their end of things that he could be prised away.
“Obviously his form and performances will attract interest from clubs across Europe and down south in England as well, so that’s probably where a bit of noise is coming from.”
There is no way that Celtic can consider letting Nygren go at this point in time. His overall numbers are great, but his recent form has been even more impressive.
In the club's last 13 league games, he has scored 10 goals and provided two assists. He has failed to register a goal or an assist on only two occasions during this 13-game run.
Considering how close things have been lately, with Martin O'Neill's side picking up wins by the narrowest of margins consistently, all of those goals and assists have been vital. Celtic might not even have been in the title race right now if not for Nygren. Even in the Europa League, he had four goals and an assist.
Of course, things can change quickly in football. If an incredible offer comes in, Celtic might end up reconsidering their stance. But as things stand, let's hope the Hoops do not part ways with Nygren anytime soon. If there is one from their recent crop of signings that has a chance of having a long and successful career at Parkhead, it is the Swede.
