Chelsea’s first Premier League win of the year has arrived. The Blues turned Stamford Bridge into a fortress and, although they were outdone at times in goal-scoring opportunities by Brentford, Liam Rosenior’s squad stood their ground authoritatively in London and took home the three points, moving closer to European standings in the process.
The Bees started the match with a significant advantage in possession and chances, but the Pride of London caught up and ended up opening the scoreboard in spectacular fashion. In the 26th minute, João Pedro scored a wonder-goal into the top corner, following an assist from Enzo Fernández and a validation of the goal by VAR.
Mathias Jensen responded, attempting to tie the match for Brentford with one of the clearest plays of the first half that ended up hitting the post. Besides the Danish midfielder’s play, Alejandro Garnacho could have increased the lead but failed to capitalize against Caoimhín Kelleher.
Like the first half, Brentford began the second half with intense high pressure and clear chances, but a lack of finishing and the presence of Robert Sánchez were enough to keep the Blues’ goal untouched.
The match was decided in the 76th minute, with a penalty kick masterfully taken by Cole Palmer. The Englishman suffered a foul inside the box by Liam Delap, an opportunity that 'Cold' did not waste, sealing the match.
Major chances were lacking in the final minutes, as although The Bees threw everything forward to close the gap, their actions lacked clear ideas. Keith Andrews’s team sent in cross after cross but never managed to trouble the Spanish goalkeeper.
After complicated months and a poor run in the Premier League, Rosenior’s team has begun to feel a breath of hope with this victory. Chelsea is two points away from fourth place, aiming to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
