Azzedine Ounahi has reportedly been granted permission to travel to Amsterdam for talks with Ajax.
The final days of the transfer window are expected to be very busy for Ajax and Jordi Cruijff.
One of Ajax's biggest priorities will be signing a new left winger to replace Mika Godts. Noa Lang was identified as a top target to replace the Belgian winger, but the costs that would be involved in a potential deal mean it is unlikely Lang will return to Amsterdam. Ajax have reportedly now made a bid to sign Brian Rodríguez from Club América, but it is currently unclear whether that bid has been accepted or not.
A new defensive midfielder is also a top priority for Ajax. Youri Regeer has struggled so far to find form this season, and Michel Sanchez has expressed his desire to strengthen that position. Ajax were interested in bringing Edson Álvarez back to the club, but that move failed to materialise. Yves Bissouma, who is a free agent after his contract at Tottenham Hotspur expired this summer, has also been linked to Ajax.
A new right-footed centre-back is also on the agenda as Aaron Bouwman is the only right-footed centre-back Ajax currently has.
Ounahi to travel to Amsterdam
Ajax have also been linked to Azzedine Ounahi throughout the summer. Ajax held talks around a potential deal before signing Julian Brandt. It had seemed that Ajax had turned their attention elsewhere, but it seems that Ajax are still working on a deal to sign the Moroccan midfielder.
According to Santi Aouna, Ounahi has been given permission by Girona to travel to Amsterdam to negotiate with Ajax.
However, there are still other clubs in the race who are trying to sign the player.
Do Ajax need Ounahi?
While Ounahi is obviously a top player, there is an argument to be made that he is not the profile of player Ajax should be trying to sign.
In Julian Brandt, Oscar Gloukh and Abdellah Ouazane, Ajax have three quality options in the no.10 posiiton and just like Ounahi, both Gloukh and Ouazane can also play on the left wing.
It is unclear how much Ounahi would cost, but Ajax need to sign a quality left winger and a quality defensive midfielder.
Ounahi would be a luxury signing, but Ajax are not in a position to make luxury signings because the starting eleven still needs to be strengthened. There is a need for depth if Ajax want to win the Eredivisie and go far in the Conference League, but there are enough players who can play in the positions Ounahi would likely get most of his minutes in.
