Gertjan Verbeek Claims Peter Bosz May Be Jealous of Ajax’s Squad

Gertjan Verbeek believes PSV head coach Peter Bosz could be looking at Ajax’s squad with a degree of envy, pointing to the Amsterdam club’s considerable investment in the transfer market last summer.

PSV have won three consecutive Eredivisie titles since Bosz took charge and are aiming for a fourth this season. However, after ten league matches, they sit third, four points behind leaders Feyenoord and one behind second-placed Ajax.

Despite Ajax’s struggles to find consistency under Spanish coach Michel, Verbeek believes the quality and depth of their squad stand out. The club invested heavily over the summer, bringing in players including Julian Brandt, Marc Ter Stegen and Sofyan Amrabat.

Speaking to FCUpdate.nl, the former AZ and sc Heerenveen coach suggested that Ajax’s resources could make an impression on Bosz.

“Cruijff has been able to invest quite a bit and has invested. There is even a striker worth twenty million euros, Marcos Leonardo, sitting on the bench. When you then look at the fact that they have brought in Julian Brandt and Sofyan Amrabat, the versatility and the bench, then I think that Peter Bosz is looking a bit jealous at Ajax,” Verbeek said.

He also questioned whether Michel was getting the best out of his attacking options, particularly expensive signing Marcos Leonardo.

“This is a coach who looks at, per match, which players he needs. It is clear that his biggest signing is not yet paying off. Apparently, on the training pitch he is trying to put everything in, but that’s not what we need. We want to see it in matches,” he added.

Verbeek was more positive about Tolu Arokodare, arguing that the competition offers the striker an opportunity to rebuild his reputation after a difficult spell in the Premier League.
