Ruben van Bommel was asked about his father Mark’s potential Oranje role after PSV’s latest match, and the young winger offered a relaxed response to the question.
During NOS’ post-match analysis at the Philips Stadion, Leonne Stentler spoke to Ruben van Bommel while the PSV winger was still in the dressing rooms.
The conversation turned away from PSV and towards his father, Mark van Bommel, who had been mentioned as a possible candidate for the head coach of the Netherlands before Xavi Hernández was ultimately appointed.
Ruben was asked whether there had been any discussion within the Van Bommel family about his father potentially taking charge of Oranje. As relayed by PSV Inside, Mark was not initially considered a leading candidate, although his name was mentioned several times in Zeist.
The PSV winger responded in typically relaxed fashion, making clear that such a discussion was never really necessary.
Van Bommel also indicated that he would not have objected if his father had ultimately been appointed as Netherlands coach. There would have been no family veto from the PSV player.
In the end, however, the KNVB opted for Xavi Hernández as Ronald Koeman’s successor, while Mark van Bommel took a different international route by becoming head coach of Belgium.
