Following a dominant four-goal contribution against Groningen, Ruben van Bommel’s physical transformation and blistering pace have the winger poised for a senior international debut under Xavi.
Ruben van Bommel’s explosive return to form has sparked calls for an Oranje debut, with former PSV player Nordin Amrabat backing the winger to earn a place in Xavi Hernandez’s first Netherlands squad.
Ruben van Bommel’s impressive start to the season has already put the PSV winger firmly on the radar of the new Netherlands coaching staff.
The 22-year-old was one of the standout performers in PSV’s emphatic 5-1 victory over FC Groningen, directly contributing to four of the five goals. His performance earned him a standing ovation from the Philips Stadion crowd, with supporters loudly chanting his name when he was substituted.
For former PSV player Nordin Amrabat, the winger’s display was another indication that Van Bommel could soon receive his first senior Netherlands call-up.
Speaking on Rondo on Ziggo Sport, Amrabat made his prediction about Xavi Hernandez’s first selection.
“I think Xavi will bring him in.”

Amrabat has been impressed with Van Bommel for some time, dating back to the winger’s spell at AZ Alkmaar.
“I am impressed by him. I already thought he was a very good player in his AZ days. Also last season already, when he got injured,” Amrabat said, as quoted by PSV Inside.
The former Morocco international believes Van Bommel possesses several of the physical attributes required at the highest level. His recent return from a serious injury has only added to the admiration surrounding his development.
“He’s a good, fast player. He can still be a bit better in the small space, but he’s just come back from an injury. When you look at him, his height, his power. He has what the modern game needs. He’s become a beast,” Amrabat added.
Janssen Highlights Injury Impact
Theo Janssen was similarly enthusiastic about Van Bommel’s development, suggesting that the lengthy rehabilitation following his serious injury may have helped the winger strengthen physically.
“You train physically. You then have the time to train everything properly. An ACL injury is never ideal, but it helped in that respect,” Janssen explained.
However, Janssen also stressed that Van Bommel’s immediate priority should be maintaining his fitness throughout the season.
“If he is also good in a small space, then he will play for Real Madrid. He has to be happy with what he is good at. He is really a very big talent, but let’s hope he stays fit,” he said.
Ruud Gullit offered a more measured assessment. While impressed by what he has seen, the former Netherlands international believes Van Bommel needs more matches before conclusions can be drawn.
“He played one good match. He needs to get into a rhythm. They are really going to start keeping an eye on him now. A good player, we have to be careful with him. Peter Bosz will do that too,” Gullit said.
With Van Bommel back fit, producing decisive performances and attracting attention from former Netherlands internationals, the PSV winger has given Xavi another name to consider ahead of his first Oranje squad.
