Ruben van Bommel’s outstanding display in PSV’s 5-1 win over FC Groningen has earned further recognition, with former Netherlands international Romano Denneboom naming him his Player of the Week.

Sergiño Dest and Mauro Júnior also received praise after their contributions to the emphatic victory.

Van Bommel was at the heart of PSV’s attacking display last Sunday, contributing directly to four of the five goals as Peter Bosz’s side swept aside Groningen.

The performance was another indication that the winger is returning to his best following the serious injury that disrupted his previous season. Denneboom, who also featured for NEC during his playing career, was sufficiently impressed to select Van Bommel as his Player of the Week for De Telegraaf.

Denneboom highlighted the problems Van Bommel caused for Groningen right-back Jorg Schreuders, who was substituted at half-time.

“He completely wore Jorg Schreuders out. That one had to be substituted after half time. You notice nothing at all of the serious injury he has had,” Denneboom said, as quoted by PSV Inside.

The former international also drew a comparison between Van Bommel and his father, former Netherlands midfielder Mark van Bommel.

“I played once against his father (Mark van Bommel, ed.), who had the same kind of quirks on the pitch. Van Bommel was involved in three goals. With that kind of output, he is also moving toward Oranje,” he added.

The praise comes at a significant time for Van Bommel, with new Netherlands head coach Xavi Hernandez now assessing his options ahead of the next international period.

Van Bommel was not the only PSV player to catch Denneboom’s attention.

Right-back Sergiño Dest, who scored PSV’s fifth goal following a swift combination with Van Bommel, also earned recognition for his performance.

Denneboom acknowledged that Dest was not at his absolute best but still regarded his contribution as important.

“In PSV's resounding victory over FC Groningen, Dest didn't play super well, but he was still good and solid. Moreover, he scored after fine combination play with Ruben van Bommel. Dest is the kind of player you miss when he's not on the pitch,” the former international said.

Dest’s goal capped a convincing second-half display from PSV, who pulled away after leading 3-1 at the interval.

Denneboom also selected PSV captain Mauro Júnior in his Team of the Week and praised the Brazilian’s development since returning from his loan spell at Heracles Almelo.

“He is in my team of the week and is an example for many players. He was loaned by PSV to Heracles Almelo and has come back very strong. Now he is captain. I think that by the end of the season he is ready for a new challenge,” Denneboom said.

With Van Bommel, Dest and Mauro all receiving individual recognition, PSV’s 5-1 victory over Groningen provided plenty for Bosz and his squad to build on as the season continues.
