PSV Eindhoven produced their most convincing performance of the Eredivisie season on Sunday, sweeping aside FC Groningen 5-1 at the Philips Stadion.

Here are three key takeaways from Peter Bosz’s team's emphatic victory.

After scoring four goals across their opening two matches, PSV found their attacking rhythm in emphatic fashion.

Perišić was particularly important, scoring twice and combining his attacking contribution with a considerable defensive workload. He finished with five attempts, two on target, four tackles and seven possession regains.

Pepi also provided the cutting edge Bosz needed. The American striker converted from the penalty spot shortly before half-time before adding his second in the 53rd minute, racing onto Mauro Júnior's through ball and finishing precisely.

Dest completed the rout just three minutes later, bringing PSV's total to five.

The performance offered evidence that PSV can still produce a varied attacking threat despite the summer departures of Joey Veerman and Ismael Saibari.

The scoreline will naturally highlight PSV’s goalscorers, but Ruben van Bommel was arguably the most influential player on the pitch.

The winger was a constant threat down the left, repeatedly beating Groningen right-back Jorg Schreuders with his pace and direct running. His involvement began with the equaliser, when he burst into the area and delivered a low cross that Thijmen Blokzijl turned into his net.

Van Bommel then played a decisive role in PSV’s second. After another powerful run, he cut the ball back towards the far post, where Ivan Perišić calmly finished.

Just before half-time, he sent Guus Til through on goal, with the midfielder subsequently winning the penalty that Ricardo Pepi converted for 3-1.

His influence continued after the interval. During the move for PSV’s fifth goal, Van Bommel raced forward before rounding goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen and pulling the ball back for Sergiño Dest to finish.

A 5-1 victory leaves little room for complaint, but Groningen exposed some of PSV's defensive vulnerabilities during the opening half.

The visitors took the lead after just nine minutes when Vaessen's pass into midfield caught Kodai Sano out of position. Groningen exploited the resulting numerical advantage, and Brynjólfur Willumsson calmly finished.

PSV recovered quickly, but the early goal demonstrated the danger of losing their defensive structure when building from the back.

Groningen's threat largely disappeared after the interval, with PSV controlling possession and territory much more effectively. The arrivals of new defensive signings Filip Kostić and Lutsharel Geertruida, who both made their debuts late on, should give Bosz additional options.

The result moves PSV onto seven points from three matches, leaving them joint second in the Eredivisie, while Groningen remain on six points.

The timing is significant. PSV now head into difficult away fixtures against FC Utrecht on August 30 and Ajax on September 5 with momentum, confidence and plenty of attacking encouragement from their biggest league victory of the season so far.
