Borussia Dortmund are reportedly considering a move for PSV midfielder Joey Veerman, who remains keen on a transfer abroad. The German giants have yet to contact PSV, but a summer move is becoming more likely.

Joey Veerman’s future at PSV Eindhoven has once again become a talking point, with Borussia Dortmund reportedly considering a serious attempt to sign the Netherlands international.

Transfer journalist Mounir Boualin of Soccernews.nl reported on Wednesday that Dortmund are internally discussing a move for the 27-year-old midfielder. Veerman, meanwhile, would regard a move to the Bundesliga as an attractive next step in his career.

“The German superpower would be seen by Veerman himself as a nice next step. This is reported by German sources to SoccerNews. Dortmund is considering internally to make a serious attempt for the Volendam playmaker of the Eindhoven players,” Boualin wrote, as relayed by PSV Inside.

Dortmund Yet To Approach PSV

Despite the reported interest, there has been no formal contact between Dortmund and PSV so far, according to Eindhovens Dagblad.

The timing could nevertheless prove significant. Veerman has a release clause that allows him to leave for around €20 million, but that clause is due to expire within days. Once it does, PSV will regain greater control over negotiations and would no longer be obliged to accept an offer meeting that figure.

Veerman has made no secret of his desire to experience football abroad. The midfielder has previously been linked with moves to Italy and Spain, while Germany could now offer another route out of Eindhoven.

Analysts See Bundesliga Move As Good Fit

The possibility of a Dortmund move was discussed on ESPN's Voetbalpraat, where former players Marciano Vink and Kees Kwakman both backed the idea.

“Is he suitable for the Bundesliga? Absolutely. I'm a Veerman fan, so in that respect I really think that's the case,” Vink said.

Kwakman was equally positive: “It would be a great transfer, wouldn't it? The reports were fairly serious. It's a nice competition and it would also be the challenge he needs. I think it would be very good if he finds a new challenge.”

Vink, however, warned that PSV would have a difficult task replacing Veerman's creativity.

“I think PSV then really has a problem,” he said.

Kwakman added: “They say then: It's also good for PSV. Well... We saw that last week (at home against Fortuna Sittard, ed.). You don't just find creativity.”

Veerman has been with PSV since January 2022, winning three Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups. He was previously close to leaving for Fenerbahçe and later attracted interest from Brentford, but neither move materialised.

Vink believes disappointment after failed transfers has never lasted long for the midfielder.

“After every transfer window, whether in winter or summer, he is a little disappointed. That the club that is then possibly interested doesn’t go through, or that there is no interest at all. But within two, three weeks, he is really back to full speed again,” he said.

For now, Dortmund have not made their move. But with Veerman's clause approaching its expiry, the next few days could prove crucial to his PSV future.

Elfrink Expects Dest To Stay

According to PSV watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, the lack of concrete interest in the United States international means a departure is becoming less likely as the transfer deadline approaches.

Elfrink comments on the situation on X: “Dest's sales clause expires this weekend already. After 15 August, PSV does not have to cooperate with a transfer. Until that time, the previously mentioned 23 million remains the limit. A transfer can theoretically still happen later if a great offer comes in and a good replacement can be found.”

Dest joined PSV in the summer of 2023, initially on loan from Barcelona. His performances during his first season convinced the Eindhoven club to make the move permanent.

The right-back had been keen to make another move abroad before the World Cup in North America, but the release clause has so far failed to generate a concrete proposal.
