PSV Eindhoven surrendered a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2 against FC Twente at De Grolsch Veste, suffering their first Eredivisie defeat of the season.

Here are three key takeaways from Peter Bosz’s side’s collapse in Enschede.

PSV recovered impressively from a difficult opening period. Ricardo Pepi was forced off after only eight minutes with what appeared to be a muscle injury, and Younes Taha subsequently put Twente ahead in the 14th minute.

The champions responded quickly through Guus Til. The midfielder headed in Mauro Júnior’s cross in the 24th minute before producing another composed finish five minutes later, converting after Paul Wanner’s pass to put PSV 2-1 ahead.

However, the advantage never translated into control.

Twente continued to create openings before half-time, with Sondre Ørjasæter shooting over and Robin Pröpper forcing Matej Kovář into a save. After the interval, the hosts increased the pressure again.

Ørjasæter went close, Wout Weghorst missed from a promising position, and Twente continued to find opportunities around PSV’s penalty area.

For a side built around possession and attacking initiative, PSV were unable to slow the game down sufficiently once Twente increased the intensity.

Bosz returned to his preferred attacking trio after rotating heavily in the 4-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam, with Pepi restored to the starting XI alongside Ivan Perišić and Ruben van Bommel.

The plan lasted just eight minutes.

Pepi went down without a clear challenge and was unable to continue, with Sven Mijnans introduced as his replacement.

Mijnans had scored a hat-trick against Sparta the previous weekend. The midfielder therefore moved into the central attacking role earlier than expected, while Bosz lost the option of keeping his starting attacking structure intact.

Pepi’s injury could also have consequences beyond PSV. The 23-year-old had been selected for the United States’ upcoming international matches and has 13 goals in 42 appearances for the national team. He also featured in all five of the USMNT’s matches at the 2026 World Cup.

A suspected muscle injury now puts his international involvement in doubt.

The decisive factor was Van den Brom’s willingness to change the shape of the match in the closing stages.

Twente switched to three at the back as they searched for an equaliser, increasing the pressure on PSV’s defensive line. The adjustment quickly produced results.

In the 79th minute, Twente worked through PSV with a series of quick combinations before Weghorst escaped the defence and calmly finished one-on-one with Kovář.

Four minutes later, the comeback was complete.

After PSV failed to fully clear a corner, Daouda Weidmann collected the ball deep inside his own half and embarked on a remarkable solo run. He carried the ball through several challenges before finishing past Kovář to make it 3-2.

PSV had little time to respond and failed to produce a late equaliser.

The defeat ended PSV’s five-match winning run in the Eredivisie and handed them their first league loss of the season.

The result also had immediate consequences at the top of the table. AZ reclaimed first place, while Feyenoord’s 5-0 victory over their opponents earlier on Sunday moved PSV down to third.

Twente, meanwhile, climbed to fourth and moved level on points with PSV.

For Bosz, the defeat highlighted the difference between building a lead and managing one. PSV showed their attacking quality when they turned 1-0 into 2-1, but Twente’s sustained pressure and late tactical shift ultimately exposed vulnerabilities the champions could not repair.
