The Netherlands duo’s telepathic connection fuelled a vital victory in Belgrade, with the midfielder praising his teammate’s elite movement for unlocking the defence and securing Xavi’s first win.
Joey Veerman made a welcome return to the Netherlands squad after two years away and started Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Serbia in Belgrade.
The former PSV midfielder played an important role in the winning goal, delivering the pass that eventually allowed Guus Til to set up AZ striker Mexx Meerdink for the decisive finish.
Til had been called up by Xavi Hernandez following Justin Kluivert’s withdrawal and entered the game in the second half alongside Kenneth Taylor. His arrival helped change the tempo, with Veerman particularly pleased to see his former PSV teammate back in the Oranje squad.
“I was jumping for joy when he was called up,” Veerman told SBS6 reporter Noa Vahle, as relayed by PSV Inside. “I think, anyway, that we have a really nice team, one that can also get along well with each other. I think you can see that on the pitch as well.”
Veerman also explained why Til’s movement suits his own game so well.
“He is someone who has a real eye for depth. That is great for me, of course. If I have the ball free then someone is always running deep. He is the very best at that.”
Til was eventually decisive himself, finding Meerdink for the winner after Veerman had started the move. The PSV midfielder also came close to creating another goal when he played Ruben van Bommel through, although the chance to make it 3-1 was missed.
“I just do what I think is best. At that moment I thought that was the right choice, to lay him wide, but unfortunately,” Til told NOS.
The midfielder also felt his introduction alongside Taylor brought greater energy to the Netherlands.
“With us, energy came along. It became a bit more dynamic,” Til said.
Til was also asked about working under Xavi and the style the new Netherlands coach wants to establish.
“Spain has dominated in recent years, including in terms of playing style. It will be interesting to see how he does it,” he said.
The victory gave Xavi his first win as Netherlands head coach, while Veerman and Til both played a direct role in a result that continued their strong connection from their PSV days.
