Lutsharel Geertruida has officially joined PSV from RB Leipzig on a season-long loan, with the versatile defender set to wear the No. 2 shirt.

The agreement also includes a non-binding option to buy.

PSV have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for Geertruida's arrival, bringing an end to weeks of negotiations surrounding the 26-year-old Netherlands international.

The versatile defender returns to the Eredivisie after two seasons with Leipzig. Geertruida moved to the Bundesliga club from Feyenoord and spent last season on loan at Sunderland, where he made 28 Premier League appearances among his outings for the club.

He also arrives in Eindhoven with considerable experience at Champions League level and on the international stage, having earned 21 caps for the Netherlands.

Geertruida acknowledged that choosing his next club was not straightforward but said conversations with PSV head coach Peter Bosz and the club's management ultimately convinced him that Eindhoven was the right destination.

“Sometimes there comes a moment in a career when you’re ready for a new challenge and start thinking about the right next step,” Geertruida begins.

“In my case, this time it wasn’t an easy search. I’m 26 years old, I want to play at the highest level, compete for titles, continue to develop myself, and stay in the running for the Dutch national team.”

The defender added that he wanted regular opportunities within a team whose football suited his qualities.

“And all of that within a team where I have a realistic chance of getting playing time and that plays in a style that suits me. That narrows it down to a select few clubs—and they have to be interested in working with me as well.”

Geertruida said several conversations with Bosz and PSV's hierarchy played a decisive role.

“After several wonderful conversations with Peter Bosz and the PSV management, I became convinced that this club embodies all the aspects that are important to me right now.”

His move to PSV inevitably carries added significance given his long association with Feyenoord, where he developed and established himself before moving to Leipzig.

Geertruida stressed that joining PSV should not be interpreted as a rejection of his former club.

“I don’t expect everyone to immediately understand or accept this decision. But I hope that, in time, there will also be room to see how much love, gratitude, and respect I continue to feel for Feyenoord as well.”

He added:

“That is why I want to make one thing very clear: my choice to join PSV is not a choice against Feyenoord. I will never forget what Feyenoord has given me, and it will always remain a part of who I am.”

Geertruida now begins a new chapter in Eindhoven, with PSV hoping that his versatility and experience will strengthen Bosz's defence.

“I am now starting a new chapter at PSV, with full conviction and great ambition. I look forward to dedicating myself to my new club with great determination and achieving success together this season.”
