Valentijn Driessen slams Feyenoord’s defensive pragmatism while praising PSV’s attacking bravery, setting a polarized stage for Sunday’s Eredivisie clash following contrasting results in European competition.
Valentijn Driessen has criticised Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s cautious approach during Feyenoord’s Champions League defeat to Real Betis, while praising Peter Bosz for refusing to compromise on PSV’s attacking philosophy ahead of Sunday’s Eredivisie showdown.
Both Dutch clubs were in European action during the week, but their contrasting results have shaped the build-up to the meeting at the Philips Stadion. PSV claimed a valuable 1-0 victory away to FC Porto, whereas Feyenoord suffered a 1-0 defeat in Seville.
Writing in his column for De Telegraaf, Driessen argued that the performances reflected two different coaching philosophies, with Bosz remaining committed to attacking football while Van Bronckhorst adopted a more cautious approach.

Driessen assessed the two European performances against the backdrop of Erik ten Hag’s argument that Dutch clubs should focus more on their own identity when competing in Europe.
“It’s interesting to put PSV and Feyenoord’s European performances for the top match in Eindhoven alongside Ten Hag’s yardstick,” Driessen wrote. “Then it quickly becomes clear that coaches Peter Bosz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst are putting their own stamp on it.”
The journalist acknowledged that PSV have endured a difficult period domestically but praised Bosz for maintaining his attacking principles against Porto rather than adapting his approach to suit the opposition.
“Although PSV is in a difficult period, Bosz did not shift an inch from his offensive football philosophy, while Van Bronckhorst opted for the pragmatism that is typical of him,” Driessen continued.
“Bosz showed adventure, nerve and courage with PSV, Van Bronckhorst not with Feyenoord.”
PSV’s willingness to press aggressively and take the initiative paid off in Portugal, where Guus Til scored the decisive goal. The result provided Bosz’s side with a timely confidence boost ahead of a match that could have important implications for the Eredivisie title race.

Driessen was far less impressed with Feyenoord’s performance in Spain, arguing that Van Bronckhorst approached the contest with the primary objective of avoiding defeat rather than pursuing victory.
“Van Bronckhorst played with Feyenoord in Seville not with the intention to win, but to not lose,” he wrote, as quoted by PSV Inside.
The journalist highlighted Feyenoord’s emphasis on possession and patience, questioning whether those qualities translated into a sufficiently ambitious performance. In his assessment, the Rotterdam side lacked the confidence and sustained pressure needed to trouble Betis consistently.
Driessen also compared Feyenoord’s approach to the counter-attacking strategy Porto employed against PSV, pointing out the risks involved in relying on isolated opportunities rather than taking greater initiative.
He argued that defensive caution can reduce the likelihood of costly incidents, but suggested Feyenoord ultimately paid the price for a strategy that left them vulnerable to a decisive moment.
PSV Enter De Kraker With a Psychological Advantage
Driessen believes the contrasting European results could influence the atmosphere surrounding Sunday's encounter.
“Where PSV, in terms of play and results, got a boost from the visit to Porto, there the mood in Rotterdam was drenched with resentment,” he wrote.
He also questioned Feyenoord’s performance in possession and their lack of sustained pressure without the ball. The disagreement between Anis Hadj Moussa and Sem Steijn, who was frustrated after beginning the match on the bench before coming on as a substitute, was another negative moment highlighted by the journalist.
PSV, meanwhile, have an opportunity to carry their European momentum into the domestic campaign. Despite recent setbacks, Bosz’s side demonstrated in Porto that they can still impose their style against strong opposition away from home.
Driessen also pointed to a change in the atmosphere surrounding PSV compared with last season, suggesting the circumstances heading into this meeting are different from those surrounding their previous encounters.
[IMAGO/ANP]Ten Hag Expected To Favour PSV Victory
Looking ahead to Sunday, Driessen expects both managers to remain faithful to their respective footballing philosophies, describing Bosz as an idealist and Van Bronckhorst as a pragmatist.
The outcome could also have wider implications for the Eredivisie standings, with FC Twente potentially able to move within three points of league leaders Feyenoord.
Driessen concluded that Ten Hag, whom he described as a guardian of the Dutch School, would favour a PSV victory.
With Feyenoord looking to protect their position at the summit and PSV aiming to close the gap, Sunday's clash will test not only both teams' quality but also the contrasting approaches that have defined their European campaigns this week.
