As injuries force the Dutch champions back into the transfer market, a harsh critique of Sam Lammers’ mentality casts doubt on his potential Eindhoven homecoming.
PSV are reportedly still searching for a striker following Alassane Pléa’s injury, with former academy player Sam Lammers emerging as a possible option.
Valentijn Driessen, however, has questioned whether the FC Twente forward is the right solution.
PSV are continuing to assess their options in attack after Alassane Pléa suffered an injury during training on Friday, 14 August, ahead of the 1-2 victory over Excelsior. The French forward is expected to remain sidelined until around the end of September.
With Ricardo Pepi currently the club’s main available striker, PSV are reportedly considering Sam Lammers as additional cover. The 28-year-old was developed by PSV before leaving Eindhoven for Atalanta in 2020 and now finds himself behind Wout Weghorst in the pecking order at FC Twente.
However, De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen is not convinced by the idea of bringing Lammers back.
Speaking on the Kick-off podcast, as quoted by PSV Inside, Driessen suggested Lammers could perhaps serve as a backup to Pepi but questioned his suitability for the role.
“Maybe as a backup for Ricardo Pepi. But Sam Lammers is a bit of a weakling... A good footballer, but once it really comes down to it. Against Qarabag he got the chance as a substitute, but we didn’t see him. Everywhere you can see they would love to have him come, but nowhere do you see people crying that he leaves.”

“I understand why PSV wants someone to replace Pepi, because Alassane Pléa is injured again. But then you could just as well, or even better, have kept Myron Boadu? He is still looking for a club.”
Lammers’ situation at Twente as relayed by PSV Inside has also intensified the transfer speculation.
The striker did not travel with John van den Brom’s squad for Thursday’s Conference League qualifier against Qarabağ. Van den Brom stated that Lammers was suffering from a hamstring injury, although some Twente supporters have questioned whether the reported PSV interest could also be relevant.
On X, supporters reacted to the news with speculation.
“Stop talking. Lammers is in talks with PSV,” wrote FC Twente fan Gert Eilander.
Another supporter, Cindy, asked: “Lammers on his way out?”
For PSV, the situation remains clear: with Pléa sidelined until the end of September, the club needs to determine whether Pepi has sufficient support in attack.
Lammers is reportedly among the options being considered, although Driessen and Verweij have already raised questions about whether the former PSV striker represents the best solution.
