Rafael van der Vaart has welcomed Joey Veerman’s return to the Netherlands squad, suggesting the former PSV midfielder’s passing ability fits closely with the football Xavi Hernández wants his team to play.
Veerman has been recalled to the Oranje squad after falling out of favour following Euro 2024, when Ronald Koeman stopped selecting him. His return comes after his summer move from PSV to Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking on Renze, analyst Ronald de Boer suggested there is a clear tactical reason behind Xavi’s decision to bring Veerman back into the squad.
“I’m really curious how Xavi is going to play. The possession-based play that he played at Barça, that’s something he wants as well. That’s why he has brought Joey Veerman in again.”
Van der Vaart, meanwhile, said he was pleased to see the midfielder back with the national team. He then drew attention to a specific quality that could make Veerman useful in Xavi’s system.
“I’m just glad that Veerman is back again. He really has the passing that Xavi had back then.”
The former Netherlands international was careful not to suggest Veerman is at the same level as Xavi was during his playing career, but explained that the comparison was about the midfielder’s ability to distribute the ball.
“That’s why they brought him back. I’m not saying he’s that good, but you know what I mean.”
Veerman’s return gives Xavi another option in midfield as the new Netherlands head coach begins to establish his preferred style. The Spaniard has previously spoken positively about Veerman’s technical qualities and his ability to contribute to the team’s build-up play.
