Despite PSV's dominance, Valentijn Driessen argues Ajax possesses the Eredivisie's superior bench. He claims Amsterdam’s depth outshines rivals as injuries expose cracks in the reigning champions' youth-heavy reserves.

PSV are widely regarded as having one of the strongest squads in the Netherlands, particularly when it comes to depth.

However, journalist Valentijn Driessen has challenged that assessment, insisting that Ajax currently have the best squad in the Eredivisie.

Speaking on Kick-off, the podcast of De Telegraaf, Driessen argued that Ajax have more players capable of making an impact from the bench than their domestic rivals PSV and Feyenoord.

The journalist pointed to the quality of the substitutes available to Ajax, suggesting that the Amsterdam club have greater strength in reserve despite their inconsistent performances this season.

“The youth players from PSV just don't. At Feyenoord, too, players come on who don't make a difference. At Ajax you have some of them.”

His comments come at a time when PSV head coach Peter Bosz has increasingly been forced to turn to younger players because of a lengthy injury list. The absences have placed greater demands on the squad and raised questions about the depth available to the Eindhoven club.

While PSV and Feyenoord have generally been viewed as the leading contenders in the title race, Driessen believes Ajax possess the personnel to challenge that hierarchy.

Verweij Believes Ajax Can Enter Title Race

Driessen's colleague Mike Verweij also joined the discussion, acknowledging that Ajax have yet to produce consistently convincing performances but suggesting their results leave plenty of room for optimism.

Verweij highlighted several matches in which the Amsterdam side could have collected more points, including their home fixtures against SC Heerenveen and PSV.

“Ajax isn't playing well yet, but they could have won at home against SC Heerenveen, at home against PSV,” Verweij said, as quoted by PSV Inside. “They could have had a few more points, although that also applies to PSV and Feyenoord.”

Ajax endured a disappointing campaign last season and were largely absent from the battle for the Dutch championship. Their current position, however, has given Verweij reason to believe that a title challenge could be possible.

Despite sitting three points behind Feyenoord, Ajax are currently second in the standings. Verweij believes their position is particularly encouraging given that their performances have not yet reached the expected standard.

“If you are doing so well without playing well at all... Even though they are still three points behind Feyenoord: they are second at the moment. That surprises Ajax itself, too, I think. Then it can only get better. I think Ajax can start to play a part in the title race,” he concluded.
