Xavi Hernández has announced his first Netherlands squad, with PSV duo Lutsharel Geertruida and Ruben van Bommel both selected, and Van Bommel in line to make his senior Oranje debut.

The Spaniard has named a 26-man squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, marking a new era for the Netherlands following Ronald Koeman’s departure.

For PSV, the headline is the inclusion of both Geertruida and Van Bommel. Geertruida has established himself as a regular under Peter Bosz since arriving on loan from RB Leipzig, while Van Bommel has earned his first senior international call-up after his strong start to the season.

Van Bommel’s selection also carries a family significance. The 22-year-old becomes the first member of the Van Bommel family to represent Oranje since his father Mark, who captained the Netherlands at Euro 2012. Ruben’s grandfather, Bert van Marwijk, was also Netherlands head coach at the 2010 World Cup.

Xavi has also brought former PSV midfielder Joey Veerman back into the Netherlands squad.

Veerman last represented Oranje at Euro 2024, but Koeman subsequently left him out. The midfielder moved from PSV to Borussia Dortmund during the summer and has now returned to the Netherlands squad under Xavi.

For Guus Til, however, there is no place in Xavi’s first squad despite the PSV midfielder having been part of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad earlier this year.

The new coach has instead opted to introduce Van Bommel and Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiël as the two newcomers to the senior squad.

One of the most significant decisions concerns Memphis Depay. The Netherlands’ all-time leading goalscorer has been omitted from the squad, while captain Virgil van Dijk remains part of Xavi’s plans.

The squad also contains several former PSV players, including Noa Lang and Donyell Malen, while Denzel Dumfries is another familiar name from his time in Eindhoven.

Xavi will begin his tenure with four Nations League matches during the extended international window. The Netherlands face Germany at home on September 24, followed by away matches against Serbia and Greece before hosting Serbia again on October 4.

For PSV, the selection provides another indication of the club’s presence in the national-team picture. Geertruida has been rewarded for his immediate impact in Eindhoven, while Van Bommel now has the chance to continue his development under Xavi.

The biggest milestone, however, belongs to Van Bommel. After returning from a serious knee injury and establishing himself again at PSV, the winger now has his first senior Oranje call-up.
