Since arriving from RB Leipzig, the Dutch defender has transformed the Eredivisie leaders' backline with composure, tactical versatility, and an authoritative presence that anchors Peter Bosz's system.
Lutsharel Geertruida has quickly established himself as a key figure in Peter Bosz’s PSV side, with former PSV player Björn van der Doelen and journalist Marco Timmer highlighting the defender’s composure, versatility and influence since his arrival from RB Leipzig.
Geertruida officially joined PSV last month on loan from RB Leipzig and has wasted little time securing his place in Bosz’s starting XI.
The defender made his first start for the club in the 3-1 victory over Ajax on 5 September and has remained an undisputed starter since. His performance in Amsterdam also caught the attention of Van der Doelen, who discussed the Dutch international on the Skiete Willy Podcast from Voetbal International.
Van der Doelen did, however, suggest that PSV could occasionally move the ball more quickly from the back.
“When I'm watching, as a supporter, I feel that: for me it can be a bit quicker at the back now and then.”
The former midfielder also suggested that the slower tempo may be deliberate, with Bosz perhaps encouraging Geertruida to remain patient in possession and draw opponents forward.
“Maybe that's a very deliberate choice by Bosz too: keep him at your feet for now, just let someone come in.”
Timmer was more emphatic about the qualities Geertruida has brought to PSV’s defence, particularly his ability to remain composed when under pressure.
“He is so extremely comfortable with the ball that it looks like nonchalance or that it’s offhand. But he plays so easily.”
According to Timmer, that composure is precisely what PSV require from their defenders.
“He brings so much calm to PSV in the back. This is really exactly what PSV needs at the back.”
Geertruida’s contribution goes beyond his work in possession. His ability to cover large areas of the pitch has also stood out, particularly during PSV’s victory over Ajax.
Timmer pointed to the way the defender tracked Julian Brandt deep into Ajax territory while still maintaining his defensive responsibilities.
“He slides through just as easily. He had to cover all the way against Brandt, deep into the other half.”
That capacity to step forward and cover space gives Bosz another option when PSV defend aggressively and keep a high line.
As relayed by PSV Inside, Van der Doelen also highlighted Geertruida’s physical presence and his contribution at the other end of the pitch, with the defender having scored against Ajax.
“I think that's a very good player. He has presence as well and that goal is fantastic.”
Geertruida’s arrival has therefore given Bosz a defender capable of contributing in several phases of the game. His comfort on the ball, ability to cover space and calmness under pressure have quickly made him an important part of PSV’s defensive structure.
After just a few weeks in Eindhoven, the loan signing is already receiving recognition for the qualities he has brought to the team.
