PSV head coach Peter Bosz and midfielder Guus Til praised their team’s effectiveness and maturity after Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Ajax, while the heated Ruben van Bommel-Aaron Bouwman collision dominated the aftermath.

PSV left the Johan Cruijff ArenA with three important points after a fiercely contested De Topper, with Bosz’s side ultimately proving more clinical and composed when it mattered most.

Ricardo Pepi opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a superb header following a flowing move involving Armando Obispo, Ivan Perišić and Ruben van Bommel. Tolu Arokodare restored parity for Ajax in the 23rd minute, but Lutsharel Geertruida restored PSV’s advantage with a brilliant strike just before half-time.

Esmir Bajraktarević then sealed the victory in stoppage time, finishing into the far corner to complete a 3-1 win.

For Bosz, PSV’s ability to turn their pressing into opportunities was decisive.

“We were more effective than Ajax. They played long balls to get past our high press. When we intercepted those balls, and we did so several times; we were able to quickly create danger from our press. In the first half, the game went back and forth, but in the second half we were able to control it much better, and that led to the victory. We’re very happy about that, and we celebrated it properly in the locker room.”

The PSV coach was particularly pleased with the collective effort from his players, including those introduced from the bench.

“I especially enjoyed my team and the way we fought together. It’s not easy to come off the bench in these kinds of matches, but everyone who did so led the charge. It was a real classic. I love it when the intensity is high on the field and it doesn’t turn into a game of chess.”

Bosz also highlighted the quality of PSV’s opening two goals, explaining how his side exploited the spaces created by Ajax’s diamond formation.

“That first goal was amazing, and the second one went in nicely too. On the first one, we switched sides well. Against a team that defends in a diamond formation, the space is often on the other side. Perišić and Van Bommel did that well, and Pepi finished it off nicely.”

Geertruida, who joined PSV during the summer, made his first-team debut in one of Dutch football’s biggest fixtures. Bosz was impressed by the defender’s display.

“Very good. He’s a young player with experience, and he’s played in matches like this before. He had to spend a few weeks observing how we defend; since we play man-to-man coverage, and on top of that, he had to mark who I consider to be Ajax’s best player today: Julian Brandt.”

Guus Til echoed Bosz’s assessment of PSV’s performance, particularly after the interval.

“We played very maturely, especially in the second half. In the first half, the game went all over the place, but after halftime, we didn’t give away many real big chances.”

The midfielder also pointed to a crucial moment shortly before half-time, when Steven Berghuis missed a major opportunity to put Ajax ahead.

“In top-level matches, the results are often decided by key moments. That was the case today as well. If you fall behind, it’s a whole different story, but we took the lead. Because of that, we were able to play more on the counterattack in the second half, for example. Ajax had to come at us, but they didn’t really manage to do so. As a result, we had a number of good opportunities on the counterattack.”

Til also praised PSV’s squad depth after the substitutes made an impact.

“The way Sven, Esmir, and really everyone who came off the bench played was truly fantastic. That shows just how deep our roster is and how important that is.”

The most controversial moment came in the second half when Van Bommel collided heavily with Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman. The PSV winger received a yellow card, while VAR Pol van Boekel did not recommend an intervention.

As reported by PSV Watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, Bouwman was taken to hospital for a check-up, while Van Bommel immediately apologised to the Ajax players and did not take part in PSV’s celebrations.

Bosz said the incident had clearly affected his player.

“He didn't do it on purpose. He was turning away. Ruben was shaken up and didn't join our celebrations.”

Asked whether the challenge warranted a red card, Bosz stopped short of offering a definitive verdict.

“I'm not objective. I certainly watched the replay. He judged that he could head the ball away while jumping. Then, likely fearing a clash of faces with Bouwman, he turned away. The impact was severe.”

Ajax coach Michel Sánchez believed the incident could have resulted in a red card, with his view translated afterward: “There was no intention to play the ball.”

Bosz nevertheless defended Van Bommel’s aggressive approach to the contest.

“Playing with grit and determination, that’s part of a big match. He played exactly the way he needed to. Absolutely. I thought he was very strong.”

He added:

“It wasn't an attempt to smash into anyone. He was turning away. Ruben did a great job today. That’s football, isn’t it? If it’s a red card, it’s a red card. But that’s the nature of the game. If he did it deliberately, then it’s a red. But I believe him. Ruben needs to keep this up, keep helping out in defense and contesting duels.”

For Til, meanwhile, the significance of the result was straightforward.

“It’s wonderful to win here. It was about time, too.”

PSV’s 3-1 victory gives Bosz’s side an important early-season boost, with their effectiveness in decisive moments and second-half control ultimately separating the two sides in Amsterdam.
