Jose Mourinho is the new manager of Real Madrid. Florentino Perez's return means that it is as good as done. Now, the club can focus on rebuilding the squad.

Somehow, adding Kylian Mbappe to a Champions League-winning squad has not had the effect that Real Madrid would have been hoping for.

Now, they need to restructure the squad in a way that they can start producing results once again. And Mourinho seems to have an idea what he needs.

Mourinho seems to be keen on signing a midfielder who has been relegated in each of the last two seasons, with different teams.

The player we are talking about is none other than Mateus Fernandes, currently on the books at West Ham United, who have dropped down to the Championship after finishing 18th in the Premier League.

Fabrizio Romano said while speaking on his YouTube channel on the situation involving Mourinho, Fernandes and Real Madrid:

"Don't forget also the appreciation of the Portuguese manager of Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho, because Mourinho appreciates Mateus Fernandes. At the moment, still nothing advanced, still nothing close, but is one of the names being discussed for this possibility.

"So one of the names part of the conversation between Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid management team last night was also Mateus Fernandes.

"So he's one of the players appreciated by Mourinho."

Despite West Ham United's struggles last season, Fernandes is someone who earned a lot of plaudits for his performances. As a result, despite their relegation, it looks like he is going to be playing for a top club next season.

Who will that club be? That is the question that we will try to find the answer to over the coming weeks.

It is clear that he is appreciated by Mourinho, who wants him at Real Madrid. But he is not the only one.

Manchester United are believed to be keeping Fernandes on their radar as well. And he might have a much easier time getting opportunities at Old Trafford than at Real Madrid.

Other than that, Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Fernandes, although, their interest might depend on the future of Enzo Fernandez.

Incidentally, Fernandez is another midfielder who has been linked heavily with a move to Real Madrid in recent times.

So, this could turn into a game of midfield transfer dominoes. Let's see who Real Madrid end up signing this summer, if at all.

Also, this kind of interest means that West Ham United are in a strong negotiating position, even if they find themselves in the second division of English football now.

It has been suggested that they would want a transfer fee in the region of £80 million to part ways with Fernandes.

Is that something Real Madrid would be willing to pay, knowing the risk involved in bringing in a midfielder from the Championship and then it not working out?
