Dani Carvajal's current contract at Real Madrid is set to run out this summer. Is he set to leave the club?
Dani Carvajal has been a stalwart for Real Madrid for over a decade. He is the current captain of the club. But over the last several years, a string of captains have left the Bernabeu.
Carvajal's current deal with the club runs out this summer. So far, there had been no clarity on the situation, whether he was going to sign an extension or leave. Now, there finally seems to be.
Earlier in the day, the club officially announced that Carvajal had suffered a fracture of the distal phalanx of the fifth toe on his right foot.
That is not the only significant piece of news surrounding Carvajal that has come out today though.
According to MARCA, the club has already decided not to offer Carvajal a renewal. This decision is related to his limited playing time in the final stretch of the season.
It looks like these are the final few weeks of Carvajal as a Real Madrid player. What is unfortunate is that there is no guarantee that he will ever play in the famous Royal White jersey again.
The injury is expected to keep him out for two to three weeks, if reports in the Spanish media are accurate.
So, the best-case scenario is that Carvajal could be fit in time to take on Athletic Bilbao in the final match of the season, which will also be his Real Madrid curtain call.
It will certainly be the end of what is one of the most legendary Real Madrid careers. The Spaniard has quite the run. Nobody could have predicted the things he would go on to achieve when Los Blancos decided to bring him back after just one season at Bayer Leverkusen all those years ago.
Carvajal had come through the club's youth system and left without making a single senior appearance. That is not a rare story. But what followed most certainly is.
Upon returning, Carvajal became an integral part of the team and went on to win six Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles, and numerous other trophies during his time at the Bernabeu.
Now, he looks set to bring an end to his time at the club as captain. It has most certainly been a race run well from one of the most resilient individuals in Real Madrid history.
It will be interesting to see what lies ahead for Carvajal. He has dealt with quite a few injury problems in recent times. We can only wish him the best moving forward.
