Manchester United has been struggling with their under-par midfield since the start of the season, as Bruno Fernandes has had to do it all by himself alongside Casemiro, while other players like Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount have failed to deliver according to their potential under Ruben Amorin.
United have failed to bring in any formidable new signings for their midfield compared to their attacking reinforcements like Bryan Mbuemo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha after splashing a significant amount of money for them.
Despite Amorin constantly denying making any significant moves during the winter transfer window, an experienced midfielder who would make an immediate impact is the need of the hour, according to the fans.
The Reds have been linked with a number of playmakers, as various reports suggest Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba to be their prime target in 2026, alongside Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest youngster Elliot Anderson. But all of these signings would come at a cost for the club management, as they are unlikely to make another spending spree after they spent over £200 million during the summer.
Although there seems to be some hope for United during the winter transfer window as former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves is could leave Saudi club Al Hilal in January as according to the Daily Mail (h/t Mirror), Neves' current club is ready accept offers around £20 million for the 28-year-old midfielder during the transfer window as the Portuguese has shown no intention to extend his contract at Al Hilal.
This makes Neves a practical option for the Reds due to his low asking price and availability during the upcoming transfer window.
Manchester United has reportedly resumed its quest for the experienced midfielder after missing out on him in 2023 when he left Wolverhampton for the Saudi league.
Neves, 28, captained Wolves to promotion to the Premier League in 2018 and played more than 250 times for the club in six years. He became one of the Saudi Pro League's big statement signings, though, following compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo in moving to the Gulf.
The Portuguese signing in January could be the perfect fix for their under-par midfield, and Neves, with his previous experience in the Premier league is expected to make an immediate impact and help United in fulfilling their top four aspirations this season.
