United is looking to inject midfield might. Carrick seeks immediate impact from a familiar Premier League presence in the January transfer window.

Manchester United's tumultuous season shows no sign of stopping as they were knocked out of the FA Cup third round against Brighton despite creating more chances than the hosts throughout the game.

The Reds have now been limited to only one competition this season as they sit seventh in the Premier League, with the chances of a top-four finish slowly fading away as they host Manchester City this weekend.

It's been over a week since Ruben Amorin was relieved of his duties, and former United player Darren Fletcher has been appointed to handle the situation until a permanent replacement is found. According to reports, Michael Carrick has emerged as the top candidate to lead the squad for the rest of the campaign.

Now that the club's management appears to have decided on the interim manager, they will need to quickly look for reinforcements to bolster Carrick's chances of securing Champions League football next season.

According to The Guardian (h/t Manchester Evening News), United are closing in on making a move for Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves as Carrick's first signing within a few days of  his appointment as the new interim manager.

Manchester United has reportedly resumed its quest for the experienced midfielder after missing out on him in 2023 when he left Wolverhampton for the Saudi league.

Neves' current club is ready accept offers around £20 million for the 28-year-old midfielder during the transfer window as the Portuguese has shown no intention to extend his contract at Al Hilal.

This makes Neves a practical option for the Reds, given his low asking price and availability in the upcoming transfer window.

Ruben Neves could be the perfect signing this January

Neves, 28, captained Wolves to promotion to the Premier League in 2018 and played more than 250 times for the club in six years. He became one of the Saudi Pro League's big statement signings, though, following compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo in moving to the Gulf.

The Portuguese signing in January could be the perfect fix for their under-fire midfield, and Neves, with his previous experience in the Premier League, is expected to make an immediate impact when coming in this January.
