Manchester United and Manchester City contested a new edition of the derby this Saturday, Jan. 17. In a surprising turn, the Red Devils, in Michael Carrick's first match at the helm of the first team, defeated the Citizens 2-0 at Old Trafford.
The authors of the goals for the home side were Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu. Pep Guardiola's men arrived as the clear favourites to take the three points, but let slip a key opportunity to close the gap with Arsenal.
After the match concluded, the Spanish coach addressed this unexpected defeat, a stumble that seriously compromises Manchester City's title aspirations.
"The better team won," Guardiola said. "They had something that we didn't have. We always talk about the energy we need. It's related to the way you defend, with some moments, duels and situations, but also with the ball."
Pep avoided blaming officiating for Saturday's defeat, although he did point to the physical toll on his team, which played its sixth match in just 17 days, a factor that may have affected his squad's performance.
"It's my 27th derby. I've come here many times, and today we were not at the level needed to win this type of match," he said. "We tried, we talked about it, but we had that energy four days ago in Newcastle. Even against Sunderland and in the three draws we played extremely well in many aspects, but today we didn't (...) You just have to accept it and move on."
City's defeat to United this weekend could be significant in the Premier League title race, as Arsenal is increasingly pulling away.
Manchester City will return to action next Tuesday, Jan. 20, when it faces F.K. Bodø/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, Manchester United will visit Arsenal on Sunday, Jan. 25, at Emirates Stadium.
