AFC Bournemouth’s ambitious Vitality Stadium redevelopment plans have been recommended for approval ahead of a key BCP Council vote. The proposal includes a new south stand, expanded capacity, transport upgrades and over £1million in local infrastructure investment.

Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium Expansion Plans Recommended for Approval

Plans to redevelop AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium have taken a major step forward after planning officers recommended the scheme for approval ahead of a forthcoming BCP Council meeting.

Councillors are set to debate the proposals on May 22nd before voting on whether the ambitious project should be given the green light. While councillors are not obliged to follow the recommendation made by planning officers, Alexander Smith from the Daily Echo has reported that such recommendations are usually accepted in the majority of cases.

The proposed redevelopment would transform the Vitality Stadium through a phased expansion project designed to significantly increase capacity and modernise facilities. The approval is for all phases of the development. The news will come as a relief to supporters and club representatives who previously learned of a potential delay in the Vitality Stadium development timeline after a key meeting was postponed.

Central to the plans is the demolition of the existing south stand, which would be replaced by a brand-new structure featuring additional general admission seating and enhanced hospitality areas.

Further improvements include refurbishment and expansion work across the north, east and west stands, alongside the infilling of all four corners of the stadium to create a more complete and modern arena, featuring a full range of hospitality options.

The wider scheme also outlines a number of additional upgrades around the ground. These include a new perimeter fence line with turnstiles and access gates, a fan zone, ticket office facilities, new food and beverage kiosks, and a dedicated outside broadcasting area containing welfare, power and media facilities.

Plans also include secure away-team coach parking, improvements to pedestrian and cycle routes, amendments to car parking layouts and circulation routes, a replacement security building, additional cycle parking and new electricity substations, as well as landscaping and wider public realm improvements.

In their report, planning officers acknowledged the decision was "finely balanced", particularly due to concerns raised by some nearby residents. Significant weight was reportedly given to the impact the redevelopment could have on homes in Thistlebarrow Road and Middleton Gardens. However, officers ultimately concluded that the overall benefits of the scheme outweighed the negative impacts on neighbouring properties and recommended approval.

Should the plans be approved, the club would also contribute more than £1 million towards local infrastructure improvements. Proposed investments include upgrades at Pokesdown railway station, including improved wayfinding and access doors, as well as the introduction of a controlled matchday parking zone and additional enforcement staff.

Additional funding would go towards improving local bus services, cycle routes and pedestrian access, with contributions planned for BCP Council, South Western Railway, Beryl Bikes and MoreBus. Improved lighting and transport links also form part of the wider package.

Indeed, transport plans are another major part of the proposal. AFC Bournemouth intend to introduce a shuttle bus service between Bournemouth railway station and the stadium, running every 15 minutes on matchdays, alongside the creation of new bus stops near the ground.

The club are also exploring free or discounted public transport schemes with MoreBus and South Western Railway, similar to initiatives currently used by Brighton & Hove Albion.

Meanwhile, enabling works linked to the redevelopment are already scheduled to begin later this month. From May 20th, sections of the stadium will close to supporters and staff while the club progresses into the next phase of close-season work.

As part of these temporary changes, both the ticket office and club superstore will relocate off-site, with in-person visits suspended until August while redevelopment works continue. Supporters will still be able to contact the ticket office via phone and email, while the superstore will remain available online.

The proposed expansion marks one of the most significant developments in the club’s modern history and would represent a major step forward for AFC Bournemouth as they continue to establish themselves in the Premier League and prepare for a future that could include European football - a possibility that was enhanced after Manchester City's victory in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
