USA - Tyler Adams
Ahead of being one of the World Cup's host nations, USA battled hard but ultimately surrendered to defeat in their friendly match with Germany.
For AFC Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams, the 2-1 defeat to Germany was arguably one of his most encouraging performances in recent months. Tyler will have to continue to compete to remain in the Cherries side, with Alex Scott flourishing and Ryan Christie continuing to impress on international duty, but for America he remains the key cog.
Adams was at the heart of the United States' midfield battle, bringing the aggression, leadership and defensive awareness that have made him such an important figure for club and country. After recent injury setbacks, it was important that Tyler came through this fixture in good shape, and over seventy minutes was a huge positive for Adams. He looked sharp throughout with his energy and leadership qualities evident, and many assessments after the match singled him out as one of the Americans' standout performers.
Hungary - Alex Toth
Recent Cherries addition Alex Toth delivered another promising display for Hungary as they recorded a 2-1 friendly victory over Finland in Budapest.
Operating in an advanced midfield role behind main striker Barnabas Varga, Alex showed exactly why he is regarded as one of Hungary's brightest emerging talents. Toth's main contribution of the game came just before half time when he produced an excellent through ball for Varga to score Hungary's second goal, an assist that effectively put the hosts in full control of the contest.
Alex was subbed at half time as planned, but he had more than made his mark on the game. It was another encouraging step in his development and a reminder that Hungary may have another technically gifted midfielder ready to follow in the footsteps of Szoboszlai. A big plus for the nation following their failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, and a big boost for the Cherries who will be excited to see more from their January signing. With a new head coach coming in for Bournemouth, Toth has a chance to really stake a claim to be in the sides starting eleven going forward.
Netherlands - Justin Kluivert
He may have started amongst the substitutes, but Justin Kluivert was one of the brighter attacking performers for the Netherlands despite their disappointing 1-0 friendly defeat to Algeria.
Justin was introduced at half time and his direct running and willingness to beat his man certainly improved a lacklustre Netherlands side. His most notable moment came just after the hour mark when he unleashed a powerful effort from outside the box that forced an excellent save from goalkeeper.
Following the game, head coach Ronald Koeman described the result and performance as a 'wake up call' for the side ahead of the World Cup. Justin will certainly be hoping his performance will convince his manager to give him plenty more minutes in the tournament, but overall it was just as encouraging to see him involved following recent knee surgery, his return for Bournemouth at the end of the season may have been crucial.
