Steelwork Begins on Vitality Stadium's New South-East Corner Expansion

AFC Bournemouth's ambitious Vitality Stadium redevelopment has reached one of its most significant milestones to date, with the first structural steelwork now being installed in the new south-east corner of the ground.

For months, much of the progress has taken place below ground, with piling, utility diversions, ground beams and pile caps forming the foundations of the club's expansion plans. Now, for the first time, supporters will begin to see the redevelopment grow vertically.

There have been some significant delays in both the south-east and north-west corners, with the latter being held up to the installation of high voltage cables from the new substations, and the discovery of drains which resulted in the necessary installation of a water bypass. For the south-east corner, sources have suggested that there have been some incorrectly positioned holding-down bolts, which have had to be corrected.

On Tuesday, 55 tonnes of steel arrived at the stadium, some of which is now starting to be put into place, which will be a welcome relief to the club hierarchy, given the consensus amongst a number of contractors is that they are "behind schedule".

Alongside the steelwork, contractors are continuing to install precast concrete components for a new lift shaft, which will improve accessibility within the redeveloped corner. Whilst a recent Back of the Net video pondered whether there will be two lift shafts in this corner, it has been confirmed to Bournemouth Roundtable that there will be one - but one of several being incorporated into the wider redevelopment.

The south-east corner will also feature a dedicated service tunnel, allowing emergency vehicles and operational traffic to access key areas of the stadium when required. This will accessed via the widened pedestrian path, which has been constructed to the south of the Outside Broadcast compound.

The inclusion of the tunnel has been an important part of the redevelopment plans, ensuring the expanded stadium continues to meet modern operational and safety requirements.

The arrival of the steelwork represents a turning point in the project. While supporters have watched months of excavation, concrete pours and infrastructure work, the transformation will now become far more noticeable as the structure begins to rise above ground level. 

The north-west corner is set to follow suit, with concrete pours into the formwork expected to happen later this week.

Although AFC Bournemouth have never suggested the corner would be completed in time for the opening home fixture of the season, the latest progress demonstrates that the project is entering its next major construction phase.

With cranes now lifting steel into place and the first permanent structures beginning to emerge, the vision of a larger Vitality Stadium is finally becoming reality.
