Alex Paulsen's is all set for his next loan move. After gaining valuable experience in Poland, the Cherries youngster now heads to Motherwell on loan to continue his development. Could Scottish Premiership football provide the breakthrough platform he needs to stake his claim at Dean Court?
Alex Paulsen's latest loan move could be pivotal in both the short and long term for the young keeper.
Since arriving at AFC Bournemouth with an excellent reputation and already established on the International stage with New Zealand, the stopper has found first team opportunities on the south coast hard to come by. Instead, his development has continued away from Dean Court, with previous loan spells in Auckland and Gdansk, now followed by a season in the Scottish Premiership with Motherwell.
The Cherries continue to evolve as a club competing towards the top end of the Premier League and now in Europe, meaning competition for every position is fierce. Goalkeeper is no exception, and unless Paulsen returns looking capable of challenging for the number one shirt, another temporary move, or maybe even a permanent transfer, could well become the logical next step.
From a Bournemouth perspective goalkeepers need games, and regular senior football probably remains the best way to accelerate Alex's progress. Motherwell could well provide Paulsen with another big opportunity to test himself in a competitive league while continuing his development.
Previous Loan - Auckland
Alex Paulsen's loan spell at Auckland FC during the 2024/25 season could hardly have gone much better, with the AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper firmly establishing himself as one of the standout performers in the A-League. The New Zealand international played every minute of Auckland's inaugural league campaign, keeping an impressive 13 clean sheets as he helped his side claim the title in their first season. Alex's quality and consistency between the sticks earned widespread recognition, collecting the A-League Goalkeeper of the Year award, Save of the Year, and a place in the PFA Team of the Season.
Previous Loan - Lechia Gdansk
The New Zealander's loan spell at Lechia Gdańsk last season presented a very different challenge to his trophy winning campaign with Auckland FC. After arriving in Poland to gain valuable European experience, the Cherries goalkeeper quickly established himself as Lechia's number one, featuring in all but four league matches. In a no doubt more demanding environment, Alex was exposed to a faster, more physical style of football, forcing the stopper to develop his resilience and overall decision making under greater pressure. Lechia Gdansk endured a difficult campaign battling towards the foot of the table, but the Cherries will hope this only aided Paulsen's experience having now experienced loan spells at the top and the bottom of both respective leagues.
The potential of Paulsen remains evident, but there is an inevitable question beginning to emerge. At what point does a succession of loan spells become an indication that a permanent pathway at Bournemouth is becoming increasingly difficult? A standout campaign with Motherwell would no doubt strengthen his credentials to compete at Bournemouth and to new head coach Marco Rose, but equally another impressive loan may convince another club that he is ready to become their number one.
Either way, the coming season feels like the most significant of Alex Paulsen's career so far and one that he is sure to relish.
