James Hill hailed Bournemouth’s "incredible" rise after the Cherries secured another huge Premier League win at Fulham. The defender’s own journey from Fleetwood teenager to trusted Iraola regular mirrors Bournemouth’s remarkable European push with just two games remaining.

James Hill’s Rise Mirrors Bournemouth’s Remarkable Season

AFC Bournemouth’s outstanding 2025/26 campaign has been built on collective belief, tactical discipline and the emergence of players who have stepped up when needed most. Few embody that journey better than defender James Hill, whose steady rise has mirrored the Cherries’ own remarkable progress under Andoni Iraola.

Speaking after Bournemouth’s huge 1-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage - secured by another moment of brilliance from Brazilian youngster Rayan - Hill reflected on a performance full of resilience, maturity and determination as the club edges closer to a historic European qualification push.

"It's absolutely incredible," Hill said to AFCB.co.uk after another vital three points in west London.

The defender has become an increasingly important figure for Bournemouth as the season has progressed. Initially used as more of a rotational option, Hill gradually forced his way into Iraola’s plans through consistent displays, versatility and composure under pressure. Across 27 appearances this season, including 20 starts, he has played close to 1,900 minutes while contributing three assists and regularly delivering dependable performances in defence.

Whether operating at centre-back or right-back, Hill has provided Bournemouth with defensive solidity, aerial strength and the progressive passing style demanded within Iraola’s aggressive system. His emergence has coincided with Bournemouth’s excellent run of form during the second half of the campaign, particularly since the turn of the year, as the Cherries established themselves firmly in the Premier League’s top six.

His rise to becoming a trusted Premier League regular has been anything but straightforward.

Hill first broke through at Fleetwood Town as a teenager, becoming the club’s youngest-ever player when he made his senior debut in the EFL Cup at just 16 years old. He later developed into a regular in League One across the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons before Bournemouth moved quickly to secure his signing in January 2022 for a reported club-record £1 million fee.

Opportunities were initially limited on the south coast due to injuries and strong competition for places, and Hill spent time away on loan spells with Hearts and Blackburn Rovers to continue his development. Those experiences now appear to have played a major role in preparing him for the demands of Premier League football.

Rather than becoming frustrated, Hill remained patient and continued to improve, eventually earning Iraola’s trust. Bournemouth rewarded his development with a long-term contract extension running until 2029, underlining how highly the club values his contribution and potential.

The Fulham victory once again highlighted Bournemouth’s growing maturity during the run-in.

"Obviously, credit to the lads, another clean sheet in the bag going to the end of the season and just puts us in good stead going into the next games," Hill said.

"Our attitude going into games is about coming out with three points, and I think the lads were absolutely superb. As much as it was really, really tough, we enjoyed every moment."

Bournemouth showed patience and discipline throughout a difficult contest at Craven Cottage before Rayan’s strike proved decisive in the second half. Hill believes the squad’s improved game management has become one of the key factors behind their success.

"I think we understand now to see out games, not lose games, wait for our chance and be patient. I think we've done that really, really well, and through that, we managed to get the goal and take the three points," he continued.

With just two matches remaining, Bournemouth stand on the brink of the most successful Premier League campaign in the club’s history. European football is now a genuine possibility, and Hill knows there is no room for complacency as attention quickly turns towards another enormous challenge.

"The next two games are going to be really, really tough, but we're just focusing on that next one, which is Manchester City. It's going to be such a tough game, but we're really looking forward to it."
