Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Chelsea are developing a new identity, with players increasingly building brands of their own off the pitch.
In November 2025, Cole Palmer trademarked the nickname ‘Cold Palmer’, along with his name, following approval from the UK Intellectual Property Office.
The Chelsea star also trademarked his iconic ‘cold’ celebration, which has also been adopted by teammate Morgan Rogers. The pair regularly joke about who created the celebration and are often asked about it in interviews.
During the Blues’ pre-season tour of Australia, Palmer was jokingly asked by reporters what would happen if Rogers continued using his celebration following the trademark.
He said: “I’ve trademarked it, so if he tries to do anything, he’ll have the bailiffs at his door. Nah, we’ll do it together.”
Aside from the celebration, the use of Palmer’s trademark was formalised in June 2026, when the 24-year-old debuted a premium ice cube brand called ‘Cole'd’, which is predominantly sold across the UK and USA.
João Pedro has also followed in the England star’s footsteps by recently announcing trademarks for both his initials and his own celebration.
Announcing the news on LinkedIn, the striker said: “Having the number nine shirt at Chelsea Football Club means a lot to me, but I’ve always wanted JP9 to represent something beyond football.
“I have trademarked both JP9 and my celebration. For me, it’s about building something that has meaning beyond the game and creating an identity that I can continue to develop throughout my career.”
The striker also went on to say that his newly trademarked logo would feature on his custom-made Beats headphones, which are regularly seen when he arrives at matches, both home and away.
Pedro has made a prolific start to the 2026/27 season. His combined total of eight goals and assists in the Premier League so far sees him level with Erling Haaland at the top of the division’s goal-contribution rankings.
To add further salt to the wound, national team boss Carlo Ancelotti was among those in the stands at Stamford Bridge. The striker went on to win the Premier League Player of the Month award for August.
The new campaign also marks Pedro’s first season wearing the number nine shirt at Chelsea, having previously worn the number 20. Liam Delap’s £50 million move to Nottingham Forest left the shirt vacant.
The potential number nine curse at Chelsea has dominated the headlines. In recent years, multiple strikers, including Álvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuaín, Romelu Lukaku and Radamel Falcao, have been marked as failures, further fuelling speculation about a potential curse. However, if Pedro maintains his current form, he could completely rewrite the script.
With Tottenham travelling to west London this weekend, the Brazilian forward will be hoping to maintain his bright start to the campaign and make the number nine curse at Stamford Bridge a thing of the past. In doing so, he could further increase the value of his trademark, with goals bringing both individual recognition and team success.
