Liverpool 1-0 Wrexham: Rio Ngumoha Scores as Reds Continue Winning Pre-Season Start

The Liverpool eleven to begin the game followed a similar mixed experienced level to their opening pre-season game against Sunderland; however, this time with different personnel. 

LFC started players such as Mamardashvili, Milos Kerkez, Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai, who wore the captain's armband.

Opportunities were also handed to young players such as right winger Josh Abe and midfielder Trey Nyoni, with a few players standing out from the Sunderland victory; Lewis Koumas and Ifeanyi Ndukwe were also given starting spots in the first half.

Wrexham are nearing the end of their pre-season campaign as they are set to kick off their competitive fixtures next week, so their lineup was virtually full-strength.

It was Liverpool who started the game brightly, nearly scoring within the opening three minutes of the game.

A ball was turned over deep in the Liverpool half by Milos Kerkez, who then got the ball to Dominik Szoboszlai, who laid it off to a fast-running Harvey Elliott, who took the ball in his stride and drove up the pitch.

Elliott then played a perfectly weighted through ball to Josh Abe, who was one-on-one with the former Reds keeper Danny Ward, but Ward claimed the ball from Abe's feet before the youngster could get a shot away. 

The next chance fell to the Championship side as Wrexham's Sam Smith nearly scored a fantastic goal.

A ball was clipped over the top towards Wrexham striker Sam Smith, who hit a first-time volley towards the goal, which was saved by Mamardashvili; however, Smith was adjudged to be in an offside position

The rest of the first half was spent, in the main, in the Wrexham half, with Liverpool moving the ball side to side, trying to find a way through Wrexham's rigid low block, but ultimately to no avail, and the game was scoreless going into half-time.

The likes of Kieran Morrison, Rio Ngumoha, Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas all came off the bench for the 2nd half, as Andoni Iraola continued to manage players back into full match fitness. 

Liverpool again started the second 45 minutes the brighter of the two teams, with a move sparked by Dominik Szoboszlai's relentless work rate chasing a ball that many may have deemed a lost cause.

He poked it through to Lewis Koumas on the left-hand side, who slid the ball across to Harvey Elliott, and he hit a left-footed shot from the edge of the box; it was a comfortable save in the end for Danny Ward. 

For the next 15 minutes, Liverpool had a few half chances, ranging from a low-driven strike from Szoboszlai from the edge of the box to a tight-angled shot from Kieran Morrison on the left-hand side that sailed wide of the far post, but the Reds still couldn't find the breakthrough.

The Reds then introduced a further three players at the hour mark with Jeremie Frimpong, Will Wright and James McConnell all coming onto the pitch, alongside a raft of changes from Wrexham as well.

LFC then took much control from the hour mark, with the substitutes having a positive impact on the game. They would make this control count as Liverpool would finally find the goal they had been looking for after a Szoboszlai pass to Rio Ngumoha. 

The 17-year-old would run at the Wrexham defence, who would back off the tricky winger, who was given the time and space to have a shot that was heavily deflected but looped over the goalkeeper and put Liverpool 1-0 up with 15 minutes to play, which ended up being the deciding goal in a tight affair against Wrexham in New York.

Liverpool conclude their United States Pre-Season Tour with a game against fellow Premier League side, Leeds United, in Chicago on Sunday night, 9 pm BST.
