Liverpool marked their first European game of the season at Anfield with a 2-1 victory over La Liga side Atletico Madrid, but this is how the match unfolded, and all three goals that were scored in Merseyside.

Match Summary

The game started off at a good pace, with both sides having some early chances to take the lead. A shot that was dragged just wide by Alexander Isak inside the first minute of the game really set the tone for things to come. Atletico Madrid would have their own early chance with a low, driven shot caught comfortably by Alisson in the Reds' goal.

But what was made clear very quickly was the intentions from both sides, with many expecting Atletico in particular to perhaps sit back and lack anything going forward; after just five minutes of the game, it was apparent that Diego Simeone's side was not going to play that way.

How Simeone's team played was exactly something that caught Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola out in the first half, as he admitted after the game:

And this would end up costing his side significantly as Marcos Llorente would open the scoring for Atletico Madrid. After the Spanish side carved through the Reds' midfield, Julian Alvarez played a perfectly weighted ball to Marcos Llorente, who had lost his marker in Milos Kerkez, was through one-on-one with Alisson, and dinked the Brazilian shot- stopper and put Atletico 1-0 up.

Iraola then made some tactical adjustments during the half, and his side grew into the 45 minutes and finally got their reward as Milos Kerkez would make up for his lapse in concentration defensively for Atletico's opener, by winning the ball back high up the pitch, passing it to Barcola, who had his shot saved.

The parried ball then fell to Araujo, who superbly flicked the ball through two Atletico Madrid defenders to Dominik Szoboszlai. Free on the edge of the six-yard box, the Hungarian captain made no mistake, calmly slotting it into the bottom corner, bringing the game level just before half-time.

The second half began much like the first half ended, with Liverpool in the ascendancy, and it wouldn't take long for the turnaround to be complete. As the ball dropped to Alexis Mac Allister, who came out publicly during the build-up to this game, questioning why he hasn't been offered a new deal at Liverpool yet.

But he certainly did his chances of getting that offer no harm tonight as he unleashed a lethal strike into the left-hand side of the goal, past a helpless Jan Oblak to send Anfield wild and give the Reds a 2-1 lead just five minutes after the break.

A worrying sight for fans inside the ground was the substitution of Bradley Barcola, who looked to be struggling with some sort of injury or knock. Andoni Iraola, after the game, was quick to calm down these concerns:

"No injury, with Bradley it’s about building his physical condition. We don’t really know until now probably how much he can play, today we had some question marks."

The rest of the game fizzled out, with Atletico Madrid lacking any real attacking threat for much of the second 45 minutes, and Liverpool were content with their 2-1 lead, so that is how the game would finish, giving Andoni Iraola his first European victory as head coach of the club and the two midfield goalscorers being the stars of the show.

He also praised Ronald Araujo's fantastic assist, something Liverpool fans would likely not have expected from the Uruguayan when he signed for the club:

Alexis Mac Allister commended the teams "desire" and mentality to turn the game around:

"You let your football do the talking. I thought he was outstanding. He got an early yellow card that could have affected them, but to come up with a stunning strike and to play with the composure and discipline after the yellow card, I thought he was OUTSTANDING!"

"Thats the way, speak above, let the football do the talking. Show the experience, show your football, show that you’re a top international player, and trust me, this club they will reward you."
