Liverpool’s unbeaten pre-season tour of the United States came to an end as Leeds United produced a second-half comeback to claim a 4-2 victory over Andoni Iraola’s side.
Liverpool suffered their first defeat under Andoni Iraola after Leeds United overturned a two-goal deficit to secure a 4-2 victory in the Reds’ final fixture of their pre-season tour of the United States.
It had looked set to be another encouraging evening for Liverpool after first-half goals from Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz put the Reds firmly in control before the interval.
However, a dramatic second-half turnaround exposed defensive frailties as Leeds scored four unanswered goals to hand Iraola his first defeat since taking charge.
Liverpool could scarcely have asked for a better start, as just seven minutes were on the clock when Chambers opened the scoring, rewarding the Reds’ bright opening spell with a composed finish after sustained early pressure.
The goal continued what has been an encouraging pre-season for several of Liverpool’s younger players, with Chambers once again demonstrating his growing confidence despite operating in a central defensive role.
Liverpool continued to dominate possession throughout the opening period and doubled their advantage before half-time through Florian Wirtz.
The German midfielder, making another step towards full match sharpness after returning from World Cup duty, produced another reminder of his quality by finding the net to cap an impressive first-half display.
At 2-0, Liverpool appeared comfortable. Iraola’s side looked organised, energetic and in control for much of the opening 45 minutes, with the intensity that has become a recurring theme throughout pre-season again evident across the pitch.
The second half, however, proved an entirely different story, Leeds gradually found their rhythm before Brenden Aaronson pulled a goal back, shifting momentum firmly in the Yorkshire club’s favour.
Liverpool struggled to regain control as the game became increasingly open, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin soon restored parity before adding his second of the evening to complete Leeds’ turnaround.
Sean Longstaff later added a fourth to complete a frustrating conclusion for the Reds.
While the result will disappoint, pre-season has always been about far more than the final scoreline.
Iraola will undoubtedly be frustrated by the manner in which his side allowed the game to slip away after such an encouraging first half, but the contest also provided valuable lessons ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Newcastle United.
Positives To Take
Wirtz continued his steady integration into the side with another influential display, while several younger players again showed they are capable of competing alongside senior teammates.
Equally, the defensive collapse offered Liverpool’s coaching staff clear evidence of where further improvement is still required before competitive football returns.
Liverpool leave the United States having shown plenty of encouraging signs throughout the tour, but their first defeat under the Spaniard also demonstrated there remains significant work to do before the Premier League campaign begins.
