'Here We Go' Liverpool Target Lucca Brughmans Set For Medical As Verbal Agreement Has Been Reached

A move that Reds fans would not have expected this summer was for a goalkeeper, given the current goalkeeping ranks at Anfield at the moment. Liverpool have their long-time number one goalkeeper in Alisson Becker, who, despite being of interest to Juventus earlier in the window, is going to remain an LFC player this season. 

Then you have Giorgi Mamardashvili, who had an underwhelming opening season for Liverpool when he was called upon to deputise for Alisson. But the Georgian appeared set to again be Liverpool's number two going into Andoni Iraola's season at the club, with the hope being that the new Spanish manager could help with the weaknesses of Mamardashvili's game, such as his distribution and on-the-ball ability.

And the likes of Freddie Woodman, who showed himself to be a very solid pair of hands in the Liverpool goal last season when called on, has recently signed a new deal at the club.

So with these three at the club, the need for another seemed very low, but it would appear of those three could be heading to a fellow Premier League side, and that has led to Liverpool looking at a replacement. 

In recent days, Nottingham Forest have expressed an interest in Liverpool's backup goalkeeper, Giorgi Marmadashvili. As Oliver Glasner looks to bring in upgrades to his side before the window closes tomorrow night, he has identified the goalkeeping position as one that needs strengthening in the closing hours of this summer window. 

They tried to approach Crystal Palace for Dean Henderson, but Palace have made it clear that they are not willing to sell their club captain, so Forest have turned their attention to Mamardashvili and Liverpool have entertained the idea of letting the Georgian leave, which suggest that they don't see him as the long term successor of Alisson, so Liverpool have began to look elsewhere for their next elite shot stopper.

It was reported earlier this morning by Sacha Tavolieri that Lucca Brughmans was undergoing a medical ahead of a possible move to Liverpool.

The report would go on to say that if Mamardashvili signed for Nottingham Forest, the Belgian shot-stopper would come to Liverpool immediately. If Mamardashvili remained at Anfield for another season, Brughmans would stay at KRC Genk for another season. 

Then Fabrizio Romano gave the 'Here We Go' for Lucca Brughmans to Liverpool, stating that a verbal agreement had been reached between Liverpool and Genk for a deal worth €35 million (£29.9 million), and he is expected to join the Reds next summer with a medical already in the works.

This has now become a big season for Giorgi Mamardashvili and his Liverpool career. Should the Georgian remain a Liverpool player when the window closes, he must step up when given the chance to impress Andoni Iraola this season in order to show that he has what it takes to be a Liverpool goalkeeper; otherwise, he risks being moved on or dropping down the pecking order in the near future. 

As for the signing of Lucca Brughmans, it could prove to be a huge signing for Liverpool in the future, and getting someone with such high potential for around £30 million could be a shrewd piece of business in the years to come, and shows the club is preparing for life after Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker, whose current contract ends at the end of this season.
