Liverpool have been dealt a frustrating academy blow, with one of Kirkby’s most exciting young prospects choosing to swap red for red, and heading directly to one of the club’s fiercest rivals.

Manchester United Complete Deal

Manchester United have completed a deal to sign 16-year-old Isaac Konde from Liverpool, with transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that the formalities were completed within the last 24 hours. The teenager is now set to continue his development at Old Trafford.

The move is particularly eye-catching because direct movement between Liverpool and Manchester United remains incredibly rare, but United’s recent academy recruitment strategy has increasingly focused on attracting highly-rated youngsters from rival clubs.

Who is Isaac Konde?

Born on October 22, 2009, Konde has been part of Liverpool’s academy system from a remarkably young age. Liverpool’s own records show him among the group of Under-9 players who signed with the club at Anfield back in May 2018, meaning he has spent much of his footballing education on Merseyside.

Although described as a midfielder in reports surrounding his United move, Konde’s versatility is arguably his biggest attraction. He is capable of operating centrally, from the left wing and even further forward. Reports have highlighted his pace, dribbling ability and willingness to attack defenders directly, with the left flank considered one of his most natural positions.

Player Stats

Despite his age, Konde had already stepped up to Liverpool’s Under-18 side. He recorded six appearances and one assist in the U18 Premier League, gaining experience against players often considerably further along in their physical development.

His involvement wasn’t merely token, either. In May, Konde started Liverpool U18s’ 2-1 defeat against Middlesbrough and created an opportunity for Joe O’Connor before being substituted after 70 minutes.

Losing Talent To A Rival

For Liverpool, losing a player who has been developed at Kirkby since childhood will sting. At 16, there are obviously no guarantees over how far Konde will eventually progress, but United have clearly seen enough potential to make their move.

For Konde, it represents a significant gamble and an exciting opportunity in equal measure.

After growing up inside Liverpool’s academy, his next challenge comes at Carrington and should he eventually reach Manchester United’s first team, his journey from Kirkby to Old Trafford will make this seemingly small academy transfer considerably more significant.
