Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcements reportedly took them to the Bernabéu during the summer, with Real Madrid centre-back Raúl Asencio turning down the opportunity to move to Anfield.

Significant Proposal Turned Down

According to Spanish outlet MARCA, the 23-year-old received three significant proposals during the transfer window, two of which came from Liverpool and Chelsea, while another lucrative offer arrived from Turkey. Despite uncertainty surrounding his position in Madrid, Asencio elected to stay and fight for his place.

Liverpool’s interest wasn’t entirely out of the blue. Reports emerged as early as August that intermediaries had alerted the Reds to Asencio’s potential availability, with Andoni Iraola understood to rate the defender and his ability to operate both centrally and on the right.

Player Stats

For Liverpool, that versatility would have been particularly attractive. Asencio has quietly built considerable senior experience since making his Real Madrid debut against Osasuna in November 2024.

Featured stories

Across the 2024/25 and 2025/26 La Liga campaigns, he made 46 appearances, starting 36 and playing 3,378 minutes, while recording two goals and one assist. Last season alone he played 23 league matches, starting 18, and also featured eight times in the Champions League.

Those numbers are impressive for a defender who only turned 23 in February. Real Madrid themselves revealed that he had already accumulated 73 first-team appearances by his birthday, highlighting just how rapidly he progressed after coming through the club’s academy.

Liverpool Profile Fit

His profile makes Liverpool’s interest understandable. Asencio is comfortable defending aggressively and playing in a high defensive line, while his distribution could suit Iraola’s desire to move the ball quickly after turnovers.

Statistical analysis from FotMob, put his 2025/26 La Liga pass completion at 94%, while he ranked highly among positional peers for possession won in the final third.

Commitment To Madrid

There is also an intriguing twist to the story. Earlier in the summer, MARCA reported that Asencio had been told he was not central to José Mourinho’s plans, despite being contracted until 2031. The defender nevertheless remained determined to stay in Madrid.

Whether Liverpool return remains to be seen, but the summer approach reveals something important, Asencio is clearly a defender who has appeared on the club’s radar.

At 23, experienced at Champions League level and capable of covering multiple defensive positions, his name may be one worth remembering when the transfer market opens again.
