Newcastle United's Lewis Hall seemed to be the favourite for some of the window, with United holding club-to-club talks with the Magpies, but it seems he will not be allowed to leave St. James' Park this summer.
Barcelona's Alejandro Balde is a name that has been mentioned more recently, but from the outside looking in, it always seemed like a tough deal to complete.
The likes of Jorge Salinas and David Raum were also discussed at Old Trafford, but with just three days remaining in the transfer window, United are yet to sign a deputy to Luke Shaw.
Man Utd eye Ian Maatsen
Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen is not a name who has been mentioned too much this summer, but Pete O'Rourke has reported that Manchester United have enquired about his availability.
Maatsen played 82 minutes in Villa's 4-0 opening weekend defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion, as Lucas Digne left in the summer to join Paris Saint-Germain.
At 24 years old, Maatsen has played for Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa, and played in a Champions League final for the German side. He also won the Europa League with Unai Emery's team last season.
The Dutchman's contract expires in June 2030, having signed a six-year contract when he moved to Villa Park in 2024.
Why Ian Maatsen to Man Utd makes sense
A recent report from Tyrone Marshall revealed that Manchester United's signings could be any more additions before the end of this summer could be a stop-gap addition. Maatsen fits that category, given he has not been linked all summer, but he could grow into something much more than that.
The left-back would provide suitable competition for Luke Shaw this season and is a profile of player who could work well with Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford. Both players like a full-back who gets forward down the flank (albeit for different reasons), and Maatsen is exactly that.
Manchester United will have to act quickly if they want to add Maatsen to their squad for this season, although they have no chance of playing him against Ipswich Town on Sunday.
If a deal were completed today, Michael Carrick would have to wait until the next registration window – after the gameweek is over.
