The Magpies prepare to hijack Manchester United’s midfield pursuit as Bruno Guimaraes nears an exit, potentially snatching a key target from Michael Carrick’s busy summer recruitment drive.
Manchester United seem to still be searching for a third midfield signing to add to Michael Carrick's squad before the end of the transfer window.
Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have already moved to Old Trafford for £48 million and £35 million from Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively.
While Tielemans is yet to feature, Santos has impressed alongside Mason Mount in pre-season. The Brazilian has played as the deeper midfielder in all three matches so far (Wrexham, Rosenborg, and Atletico Madrid), but Tielemans looks set to be involved against Paris Saint-Germain this weekend.
Matheus Cunha, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Noussair Mazraoui also look set to return to the squad for Saturday's encounter.
United have eyed several midfielders for their potential third signing, but it seems Newcastle United could win the race for one option, with Bruno Guimaraes set to leave St. James' Park.
Newcastle United eye Felix Nmecha
While United have moved from several different candidates this summer, Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha is one who seems to be an ever-present.
He has received interest from other sides, including Chelsea, but Newcastle United seem to be winning the race as Bruno Guimaraes looks closer to an exit.
They claim that Nmecha is the "ideal" candidate to replace Guimaraes and has been the "clear target" for several weeks.
While a bid has not yet been submitted, Newcastle are said to be aware of Dortmund's demands for their German international.
This leaves United out of the picture, as the deal between Dortmund and Newcastle could be completed quickly.
A third midfielder makes sense
While United have already signed Santos and Tielemans, signing a third midfielder makes sense for Michael Carrick's side.
They looked close to signing Carlos Baleba in 2025, but chose to push for Senne Lammens and Benjamin Šeško instead.
Santos and Tielemans can be considered as replacements for Casemiro and Ugarte, but that still leaves United one short in the engine room.
Mason Mount could be the solution after his impressive performances in pre-season, although United fans feel that could be a risk due to his injury record since moving from Chelsea.
United have only spent £85 million this summer – a fee it seemed they would have paid for Mateus Fernandes. Another midfielder should be in the budget.
