Former Manchester United central defender Rio Ferdinand has urged the Red Devils to "press the green button" and sign a "top player" after the 4-2 defeat to AC Milan.

Manchester United tasted defeat for the second time in pre-season in their sixth and final match before the return to competitive action against Hull City next weekend.

Goals from Harry Maguire and Patrick Dorgu were not enough to stop the four-goal barrage from Rúben Amorim's AC Milan side, with most of their joy coming down United's left-hand side.

As United fans know, Amorim's formation is designed to spread the pitch and overload the wide areas – and it worked to great effect against his former side on Saturday afternoon. Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martínez were regularly exposed on the flank, with all but one of the goals coming down that wing.

Manchester United have been searching for a new left-back for the majority of the summer, and after yesterday's performance, it would be foolish for the club not to sign one.

Rio Ferdinand urges Man Utd to sign "top" left-back

Reacting to Manchester United's 4-2 defeat in Wroclaw, Poland, Rio Ferdinand revealed that he had heard Myles Lewis-Skelly could be available for £60-70 million. Other reports have also said that he has been offered to Chelsea and United.

"Lewis-Skelly, what I'm hearing, guys, apparently he's been offered to Chelsea and to Manchester United," the centre-back said on Rio Meets. "And if I'm Man United right now, I say: 'Press the green button and buy. Take him right now.'"

Lewis-Skelly struggled for game time throughout last term – playing 20 Premier League games and only five from the start – but he did start the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. In midfield, no less.

Ferdinand continued: "What a player. Top player. There was no coincidence in the running that he was a massive part when he got brought into the team. In centre midfield, by the way.

"In contributing to Arsenal winning that league, he was brilliant at the end of the season. What a player, young kid, goes into any environment and produces. If he is on the market, right, and it's a good price, you've got to take him."

Like Lewis Hall, there has yet to be concrete reports regarding the fee Manchester United would have to pay to bring Myles Lewis-Skelly to Old Trafford, but Ferdinand seems to believes £70 million would be a good price.

"I'm hearing £60-70 million. If that's the case, I get a cheque book out, and I slap it down, and I sign him straight away. No talking, no questions asked.

"Lewis Skelly, I'll take him."

Lewis-Skelly covers two positions Man Utd need

Manchester United are looking to sign several positions before the end of the transfer window on September 1, and Lewis-Skelly would cover more than one.

While he is primarily a left-back, Lewis-Skelly played much of his youth football as a central midfielder and has also played there for Mikel Arteta's senior side.

If he was brought to Old Trafford, the Englishman could feature on the left side of defence, while providing necessary cover in central midfield.

However, Newcastle United's Lewis Hall also spent his youth football as a midfield player.

So, Manchester United's decision should not come down to versatility; it should purely be about ability.
