Old Trafford’s greatest goalscorer claims the Red Devils are courting disaster by snubbing versatile prodigy Myles Lewis-Skelly as they overhaul their midfield during a frantic transfer window.

Can Man Utd win the Premier League under Michael Carrick? More Videos

Manchester United have had quite the transfer window, with it all revolving around the middle of the park, after Casemiro left the club and Manuel Ugarte seemingly halfway out the door, with him being out of favour since interim-turned-head-coach Michael Carrick came into power at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils haven't been shy about spending cash to replace the departing midfielders. Youri Tielemans joined for only £35 million after United triggered a release clause to take him from Villa Park.

Andrey Santos was also brought in from fellow Premier League rivals, Chelsea, with United bringing some needed youth into the midfield, and the breaking news that United are close to agreeing a deal for Brighton & Cameroonian midfielder Carlos Baleba.

Rooney wants Man Utd to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly

According to the Metro, United and Chelsea were offered a chance to sign the Arsenal academy graduate for a reasonable price of £45 million, but both teams have seemed to have snubbed the opportunity.

The 19-year-old was restricted to only five Premier League starts last year, but he did impress in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield, where he started in the midfield.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes that United are making a grave mistake by not making a move for Lewis Skelly.

"I don’t think you can rely on Luke Shaw to be consistent for the whole season, and that leads me to Myles Lewis-Skelly," Rooney said on Stick to United.

"We’re hearing that he could be available for not that much money, so I think that’s an absolute no-brainer. If you can get a player in who can play left-back and centre-midfield, that’s an absolute no-brainer. He’s young, and he’s got a massive future ahead of him."

Should United sign Lewis-Skelly?

It feels like the chance of this transfer happening is slim to none. Now that Baleba seems on his way to Old Trafford, it would be very surprising if United pursued him.

Lewis Skelly's versatility, as a left-back and a midfielder, does make him a very enticing prospect for United, and they should definitely have the Arsenal man on their radar for next season, possibly, and Luke Shaw is nearing the end of his time at United.

Pivoting to Lewis-Skelly would be an interesting move for Manchester United, but it cannot be ruled out just yet.
