Manchester United are looking for new additions across the pitch, as a return to the Champions League means a larger squad will be needed.

Manchester United's summer priority must be the midfield

Manchester United are looking at several positions for new additions in the summer transfer window, but the managerial decision is sure to have a huge impact on proceedings. Despite only narrowly beating Ole Gunnar Solsjkær to the job, Michael Carrick now seems one of the favourites for the head coach position next season.

Assuming Carrick was handed the job, defensive midfield would be his main priority, with Casemiro set to leave the club at the end of the season. Manuel Ugarte could leave Old Trafford in the summer window, but he could also be forced to stay after a recent development. Either way, midfield is sure to be the main focus for the recruitment department.

United are also believed to be eyeing attacking additions, with a left-winger looking the most likely to join the club. Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu have shared the role since Michael Carrick took charge, but Dorgu could be pushed back to left-back, with Luke Shaw the only option at present.

Spending could be difficult for United this summer. A new defensive midfielder could cost upwards of £100 million, while a winger may be over £60 million, too. If United are looking at another position, they could be forced to look at the free agent market.

United eye Scott and Senesi

Despite having a plethora of options there, especially after Harry Maguire signed a new contract, United have been heavily linked with a new central defender. AFC Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi has been mentioned in multiple reports, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

With the summer drawing ever closer, Matte Moretto has reported that United are fighting for Senesi's signature with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. The two London clubs are said to be ahead of United in the race, but Senesi will not drop down to the Championship if Tottenham are relegated.

Senesi is not the only Bournemouth star United are interested in, though. Alex Scott, who impressed many with his Man of the Match performance against Premier League leaders Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, has also been linked with an Old Trafford switch.

Journalist Paul O'Keefe claimed United "want him" in a reply to a comment on X. Scott has been linked to the Red Devils for some time, but reports have gone quiet more recently, with United seemingly focusing on Elliot Anderson.

Roundtable reported that United held fresh talks with Anderson's representatives last week, but also understands that Manchester City are in the race for the England international.

United should focus on Anderson signing

At the end of March, Roundtable revealed Manchester City were ahead of United in the race to sign Elliot Anderson. But talks have continued, and United seemingly remain interested.

Until his future is confirmed, United must continue to push for Anderson as he appears to be their main target, ahead of Carlos Baleba or Sandro Tonali.

Alex Scott could be a good option for the midfield, but he is similar to Kobbie Mainoo, rather than the man he would be looking to replace, Casemiro.

If United have funds left over after signing a high-profile midfielder (Anderson), a left-winger, a new backup goalkeeper, and potentially a central defender, then Scott should be considered.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox will be looking to sign more than one midfielder, but they should be Casemiro and Ugarte replacements, rather than Mainoo competitors.
