Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has completed a permanent transfer to Coventry City.
Taiwo Awoniyi has officially completed his transfer to join Coventry City from Nottingham Forest.
Awoniyi bid farewell to the City Ground yesterday, at half-time of the Reds' final pre-season game, a 2-0 win over French side Stade Brestois.
The Nigerian striker did not feature in the game, but was given a guard of honour by his teammates before being ceremoniously tossed in the air in front of a chanting crowd.
Forest supporters showed their appreciation for Awoniyi in a scene that became frankly emotional, as he also showed his appreciation to those who have cheered him on for four years.
A clear fan favourite, Awoniyi cemented his place as a cult hero for his heroics at the back end of his debut season on Trentside.
It was Forest's first season back in the Premier League, and the 29-year-old netted six goals in the Reds' final four games to help guide them to a 16th-place finish, ensuring survival.
Awoniyi's likeable character transcended the markings of any football pitch, and he was awarded the PFA Community Champion award in the 2024/25 campaign for his excellent contributions to benefit the local community.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis penned a parting message to Awoniyi, emphasising the significant character that Coventry have gained.
"Taiwo will always have a special place in the history of Nottingham Forest," he said. "He has been one of the defining figures in our journey and given our supporters moments of great joy that will never be forgotten.
“Throughout his time with us, Taiwo has shown great strength, determination and positivity, overcoming great challenges along the way.
“He embraced this Club from the first day and his passion and character are why he is so loved by everyone connected to Nottingham Forest.
“We thank Taiwo for everything he has given to this Club. He leaves with our gratitude, our respect and our very best wishes for the future. He will always be part of the Forest family and will always be welcomed home.”
Coventry will hope that Awoniyi can deliver a repeat of the heroics that ensured Forest's survival in the 2022/23 season, as the Sky Blues embark on their first season back in the top-flight.
At Forest, his departure could pave the way for a new addition, with it being widely reported that Oliver Glasner is keen to bring in a new striker before the summer transfer window slams shut on September 1.
