Sunderland goalkeeping prospect Matty Young has attracted transfer interest from Premier League powerhouses Liverpool amid his loan spell at League One outfit Huddersfield Town.

According to reporter Alan Nixon's Patreon, Academy of Light product Young is seen by the Reds as a potential future number one, but considering that the Black Cats have a similar plan for the 19-year-old goalkeeper, Liverpool would need to lodge a substantial bid to prize the England youth international away from his boyhood club.

Following his breakout season in senior football on loan at National League outfit Darlington, Young spent two consecutive seasons on loan at Salford City, where he featured 77 times for the League Two side, with his last game unfortunately being their play-off final defeat to Notts County.

To continue his impressive trajectory, Sunderland loaned Young to Huddersfield Town for the 2026/27 season, and the starlet shot-stopper has made a stellar start for the third tier side with two clean sheets in nine outings.

Therefore, it is no surprise that the likes of Liverpool are said to be keeping tabs on the Sunderland prodigy, but the Stadium of Light outfit remain in an extremely strong position when it comes to Young's future despite the interest from one of European football's greatest clubs.

Sunderland Have Strong Chance To Keep Matty Young With Number One Pathway

Earlier this year, back in May, Sunderland tied Young down to a new long-term contract, which keeps the academy product at the Black Cats until the summer of 2030.

By keeping Young tied down for the next four seasons, Sunderland future-proofed their goalkeeping department, which is already well stocked with outstanding number one Robin Roefs and deputy Melker Ellborg.

Considering that Roefs cemented himself as one of the Premier League's best young shot-stoppers last season with his impressive debut campaign between the sticks for Sunderland, for which he won the club's Young Player of the Season award, a substantial bid from one of Europe's footballing elite could feasibly come for the Dutch international over the coming years.

Thankfully, Roefs signed a contract extension at Sunderland this summer, but there is a clear pathway for Young to become the Black Cats' number one in the prospective future event of a big-money sale for the current number one.

Therefore, the Black Cats must remain firm and banish any interest from Liverpool in Young's superlative shot-stopping services, with the potential for the youngster to become next season's deputy and be a potential upgrade on Ellborg.

For Young's part, the boyhood Sunderland fan has previously made clear that his dream is to become the number one goalkeeper in the not-so-distant future.

After penning his new contract earlier this year, Young said: "I am proud of the achievement, but I am still focused and determined to keep progressing.

"As a Sunderland supporter, being in and around this Club means everything to me. My family are Sunderland through and through, so for them to see me sign this contract is really special."

As a result, the Anfield recruitment team's complimentary interest should be nothing to fear for the Black Cats, with Young solely focused on continuing his impressive rate of development at Huddersfield and progressing on his journey to donning Sunderland's number one jersey in the coming years.
