As the 2026 World Cup ramps up away from Wearside, several Sunderland stars are battling it out for their respective national sides, with varying fortunes.

Wilson Isidor and his fellow Haiti teammates were the first team at the tournament to suffer elimination after suffering two defeats from two in Group C, against Scotland and Brazil.

On the contrary, Isidor’s fellow Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has enjoyed an excellent time at the tournament, with the bullish Black Cats frontman bagging a brace for the Dutch side in their 5-1 hammering of Sweden on Saturday evening.

In his first World Cup start, Brobbey broke the deadlock in the opening exchanges, rounding off a move with a deft finish which showcased his brute strength and aggression in attack.

Just 12 minutes later, Brobbey doubled the Netherlands’ advantage with another close-range finish, before Cody Gakpo and Crysencio Summerville found the net alongside a Sweden consolation goal.

Dutch boss Ronald Koeman heaped praise on Brobbey following their impressive victory, suggesting that the ex-Ajax striker’s upturn in form is partly due to his much-improved fitness since making the move to Sunderland last summer.

Not only did Koeman hail the Dutchman, former Sunderland manager Roy Keane also showered the in-form frontman with acclaim.

Since arriving from Ajax to the Stadium of Light, Brobbey has enjoyed a resurgence in his career after a difficult personal period off the pitch in his final year with the Dutch giants.

Over the course of the campaign, Brobbey cemented himself as one of the most difficult centre-forwards to contend with in the Premier League, seeing the 24-year-old conclude his debut Black Cats campaign as Sunderland’s top goalscorer.

Evidently, Brobbey has continued that rich vein of form into the post-season World Cup competition with his brace against Sweden, which highlighted how effective the bruising Brobbey as a number nine.

Unsurprisingly, the Sunderland faithful showed great adoration for the Dutch frontman on social media, as well as former Black Cats Roy Keane, who hailed Brobbey for his "ruthless" performance.

ITV Sports pundit Keane said: That’s what top strikers do...

"When the pressure is on, and the whole world is watching, they step up and make the difference. Brobbey has done exactly that today.

"Two goals in a World Cup match isn’t luck. It’s about movement, mentality, and being ruthless when the chances arrive. He looked hungry from the first minute. What impresses me most is that he didn’t hide.

"Some players disappear when expectations rise, but Brobbey wanted the ball, wanted responsibility, and kept causing problems for Sweden all game.

"People talk about the big stars all the time, but performances like this are how you announce yourself on the biggest stage in football. If the Netherlands are serious about winning this World Cup, they’ll need players like Brobbey producing moments like these. Right now, he looks like a man on a mission."

In the words of Keane, Brobbey certainly does appear to be a “man on a mission”, to prove his doubters and naysayers wrong who berated him during his time at Ajax.

With bottom-seeded Tunisia next up for Holland at midnight on Friday, you would not back against the Sunderland striker adding to his two-goal tally for the Dutch in their final Group F clash.
