Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has shared the pitch with his countryman Brian Brobbey multiple times this season, both as an opponent in the Premier League campaign and alongside him for the Dutch national side at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Sunderland frontman has continued his rich vein of form that saw him end his debut campaign among England’s elite as the Black Cats’ top goalscorer into the World Cup with his outstanding display on Saturday.

Leading the line for The Orange, at his typically dynamic best, Brobbey managed to net a 17-minute brace against the Swedes to send the Netherlands on their way to the summit of Group F.

Brobbey has won the hearts of the Sunderland faithful since his £21m arrival from Ajax last summer, with his bullish, aggressive style spearheading the red-and-white attack sublimely into Europa League qualification.

Understandably, Brobbey’s Dutch teammate van Dijk has heaped praise on the Sunderland centre-forward following his outstanding performance against Sweden, with the Liverpool captain explaining just how difficult of a customer the bruising Black Cats number nine is to contend with.

Virgil van Dijk Praises Brian Brobbey After Netherlands Brace

Towering Liverpool centre-half van Dijk is well versed in the abilities of Brobbey after having to battle with him twice in the top flight this term, and seeing his compatriot dominate the Swedish backline on Saturday evening.

Brobbey broke the deadlock after just five minutes, after controlling a long kick and pinning the Sweden centre-half, before finishing off the move with a brave yet deft finish.

Just 12 minutes later, on his first-ever World Cup start, the Sunderland striker doubled his tally and the Dutch’s advantage with yet another close-range finish, before van Dijk’s Reds teammate Cody Gakpo and West Ham winger Crysenscio Summerville got on the scoresheet.

As a result of his form both in the Premier League on opposing sides, which has continued into the World Cup, Liverpool mammoth van Dijk has lifted the lid on how much of a headache Brobbey gives defenders.

As quoted by De Telegraaf, van Dijk said: "I never sit short on him and always try to read the situation.

"If that ball comes and he holds you, then you are done for. Then you'll never get to it again.

"I try to read it and stay out of the duels. In our matches against Sunderland, Brian also sought a lot of the other defender (Ibrahima Konaté).”

The Liverpool star added: "Sweden is going to defend one-on-one, and if you then create a hole and the ball falls for Brobbey, you won't get there as a defender.

"He is so strong. If you then have runners on the flanks, and we also come from the midfield. Then we can make a difference."

Van Dijk is perfectly placed to comment on Brobbey’s ample abilities, given that earlier in the season the Dutchman limited his countryman to zero shots on target and just six touches in the Liverpool box when the Reds won 1-0 at Sunderland back in February when the duo last lined up against each other.

In fact, it was van Dijk who scored the only goal of that clash between the Black Cats and Liverpool, with the Dutch stalwart enjoying one of his finest showings of the season, making 13 defensive contributions.

Regardless, Brobbey deserves great credit for his career resurgence over the last year since his arrival at Sunderland, highlighted by the fact that one of the finest defenders of his generation, van Dijk, has given such acclaim to the dynamic Dutchman.
