Sunderland are in the midst of the most important summer transfer window in the club's recent history, with multiple updates on incomings and outgoings.
With Sunderland heading into a testing campaign next season in the Premier League and Europa League, the Black Cats hierarchy must enjoy another impressive period of business in the summer transfer window.
So far in the window, the headlines at the Stadium of Light have been dominated by Chelsea's pursuit of Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, with the Blues having an opening £8m offer swiftly rejected.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea "have not given up hope on acquiring Xhaka despite Sunderland’s stance" and are expected to return to the negotiating table with another, improved offer for the Swiss veteran, but both clubs appear to be far from an agreement over the transfer fee for Xhaka.
Away from that marquee move, the immediate footballing future of several Sunderland players, namely Eliezer Mayenda, Simon Adingra and Matty Young, has begun to materialise as the transfer window enters full flow.
Sunderland Transfer Updates on Eliezer Mayenda, Simon Adingra and Matty Young
Despite the Spanish youth international being a firm fan-favourite on Wearside, Sunderland look set to part ways with Mayenda this summer as the 21-year-old forward searches for more consistent game time.
Reports emerged earlier that Ligue 1 outfit Rennes were making a move for Mayenda, and Portuguese giants Porto have entered the race, according to Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie on X.
The Liga Portugal champions are said to be monitoring Mayenda, who scored two goals in 20 Premier League appearances last season for Sunderland, but will need to shell out a significant fee for the young Spanish striker's services with his deal on Wearside still having four years left to run.
With Mayenda's departure imminent, one confirmed outgoing for Sunderland this summer comes with highly-rated young goalkeeper Matty Young, who has joined League One outfit Huddersfield Town on loan for the duration of next season.
Sunderland's Director of Football, Florent Ghisolfi, said of the move: “Matty has got a really bright future ahead of him and this loan is another crucial step in his ongoing development as a top young goalkeeper.
"The whole goalkeeping department deserves credit for his continued growth. We’re excited about watching his career continue to make forward strides at Huddersfield next season. We wish him and the club well for the 2026/27 campaign.”
Academy of Light graduate Young, who spent last season on loan at League Two Salford City and was praised by Gary Neville for his efforts, is backed by those at Sunderland as a potential future number one.
Third tier Huddersfield will be fighting for a finish in the League One play-off places next season, and Young will be tasked to continue his rapid rise and help the Terriers to promotion contention.
One Sunderland star whose future appears to be less certain than those two is Ivory Coast international Simon Adingra, who joined Sunderland from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer but was loaned out to AS Monaco in Ligue 1 for the second half of the season.
Adingra impressed for Monaco, netting three goals and notching two assists in 14 French top flight appearances for his loan side, but they have since opted against triggering the buy option included in the 24-year-old's loan deal which will see him return to Wearside after the World Cup.
Given that Sunderland quickly loaned Adingra out, and with the emergence of Chemsdine Talbi and Nilson Angulo as Regis Le Bris' favoured left-wing options, the Black Cats will seemingly look to move the former Brighton starlet on this summer, but it remains to be seen who his next employers will be.
