Anthony Joseph has confirmed some great news for Celtic as the club are now ready for the next step.
Celtic have a lot of work to do this summer. Even though they might have won the double this season, against all odds and expectations, the Hoops cannot be satisfied with their overall campaign.
They were nowhere near good enough. Their performances in front of goal and at the back dropped drastically. And their points tally was significantly lower than their usual standards.
In fact, Celtic had just five points more than what they managed in the 2020/21 campaign. That should tell you everything you need to know.
Yes, Celtic did win a league and cup double. But a large part of that was down to how badly the Rangers did as well.
Celtic need to be ready for the Rangers to improve and for Hearts to build on their success of this season.
Fortunately, it looks like they have finally decided on their next manager and now should be free to start working on strengthening the squad.
According to a report from Anthony Joseph on Sky Sports, Martin O'Neill has agreed to become Celtic's permanent manager. He is set to sign an initial one-year deal.
Of course, he played an important part in Celtic's success in the 25/26 campaign. So, it is the right step to continue with the Northern Irishman in charge rather than making a risky decision.
Robbie Keane was the alternative. And a lot of fans did not seem happy with that, for one reason or another.
It goes without saying that this is going down as the popular choice. A lot of fans wanted to see O'Neill back in the hot seat after how well he did.
The only question was about his age. O'Neill is 74 years old now and admitted more than once that managing was taking a toll on him.
The Northern Irishman seems to have decided though that he still has one more year in the tank. And a lot of that could be down to him wanting to get another chance in Europe.
Many might feel this is the wrong choice as well, and that is a valid stance to have. O'Neill won two trophies in his last two games and the manner in which the league was secured felt like the storybook ending for him. From here, it is hard to imagine that things can get any better, unless he delivers the treble.
Anyways, it is great that Celtic's managerial search has ended. Now, it is time to turn the focus onto a summer rebuild and hopefully O'Neill will get his say.
