An agreement has been reached over a permanent transfer, as the Celtic exit proves final.
The Celtic recruitment in recent years has been questionable at best. Just look at the recent winter transfer window as an example.
With the club struggling to find a consistent goalscorer throughout the first half of the season, it was very clear they needed to bring in a quality forward or two.
The Hoops did make a couple of additions to their squad up top. Tomas Cvancara was brought in from Borussia Monchengladbach and Junior Adamu from SC Freiburg.
Neither was amongst the goals at that point in time though. And as a result, it should not have come as a surprise that it did not change at Celtic Park either.
Cvancara was involved for a while but did not score enough. On the other hand, Adamu barely played.
Celtic had an option to buy included in both deals. But it was expected that they would not take up either. And that has now been pretty much confirmed as well, as Adamu is already set to join a different club.
According to Florian Plettenberg, an agreement has been reached with SC Freiburg for Adamu to join Schalke. The transfer fee is going to be €800k plus add-ons.
It is worth pointing out that Celtic's option to buy in the deal was believed to be around €5 million. So, they would have paid more than six times if they had wanted to keep Adamu at the club beyond his loan spell.
It is unsurprising that they did not. We can only wish Adamu the best of luck at Schalke and hope he does well there.
As for Celtic's striker ranks, it could still need some work. Let us not forget that Daizen Maeda is widely expected to leave this summer, having spent four-and-a-half years at the club.
He was the club's talisman in the final weeks of the season, powering them to a league and cup double.
Kelechi Iheanacho's future remains uncertain as well. But after his impact off the bench, fans will be hoping that he is handed the one-year extension. The Nigerian not only brings a goalscoring ability but also experience to this squad.
Celtic could still need to sign a consistent goalscorer though. They have recently been linked with Elias Filet.
While Filet did score 22 goals last season, they came in the second division of Swiss football. So, there are serious doubts about whether it would translate when it comes to the Scottish top flight and European competitions.
