There is a behind-the-scenes update on Celtic amid all the speculation around Martin O'Neill's future at the club.

Most fans would like to see Celtic make some necessary changes over the coming weeks and months. The start to the campaign has been a poor one, even though the club sit atop the league table.

To be fair, we have seen two sides to this Celtic team already. Early in the campaign, they had looked confident and were playing free-flowing football.

But things appeared to take a turn when they lost the second leg of the Champions League qualifier play-off against LASK by a 5-1 scoreline and were knocked out, despite leading the tie by four goals with less than an hour to go.

That result appears to have dented Celtic's confidence badly. And they then went into the international on the back of a three-game losing streak, two of those coming against the Rangers, both home and away.

Naturally, questions are being asked about Martin O'Neill. But the board's stance on the matter has been made clear.

Celtic never intended to sack Martin O'Neill during this international break

According to a report from Anthony Joseph on Sky Sports, Celtic have always remained calm regarding the situation. There was no appetite to pull the trigger themselves, especially when the team is sitting at the top of the league.

So, there was never a real chance that Celtic would sack O'Neill. But the manager himself could have chosen to walk away. But according to Joseph, he very quickly indicated his intention and desire to stay.

That being said, it does not mean that the situation is settled in the long run. Celtic have some very tricky games coming up.

Celtic are set to face, Motherwell away, Benfica away, Hearts at home, Celta Vigo at home and then Hibernian away over the next five games. That is not an easy run of fixtures, especially for a team that has lost three on the trot.

Celtic need to turn things around

Celtic need to get back to the basics in many ways. Right now, this seems like a team that is short on confidence and probably a bit confused about what is expected of them.

Cameron Carter-Vickers' comments following the Glasgow Derby defeat at home did seem to suggest so.

The players need to improve. But the coaching team also need to reassess the situation and try and ensure they get the best out of the squad available to them.

Could they even add to it by signing free agents? It has been suggested that Tiemoue Bakayoko is someone being looked at right now.
